Also, one key thing to keep in mind is partners. There are some partners unique to each. For example, CO has partners such as Virgin and Qantas, NW does not. NW has partners JAL and Cebu Pacific, CO does not.
There are also nuances as to which count towards Elite and which don't.

Re upgrading of the domestic portion of international trips, I am sure that NW does use their version of EUA (at least as of Tuesday).
I had the impression from other threads that CO does not. Perhaps someone with recent CO experience could comment.

I've gotten EUA'd on CO metal this year for CO elite status on domestic leg of international itinerary (ATL-EWR portion of an ATL-BRU roundtrip).
Have also gotten in the habit of trying to book Hawaii paid coach tickets on either CO or NW to connect, if possible, in LAX, SFO or SEA to maximize upgradeable time flying over mainland and minimize "over the water" sardine time.

Has anyone sat in the rear section (behind the emergency exit rows) of a CO 737-700? I have a hard time believing that seat pitch is even 31 inches. When I was back there, my knees were jammed against the seat in front of me and I'm only 6'1'' I have never felt so cramped on any of the other major airlines.
