I've gotten EUA'd on CO metal this year for CO elite status on domestic leg of international itinerary (ATL-EWR portion of an ATL-BRU roundtrip).
Have also gotten in the habit of trying to book Hawaii paid coach tickets on either CO or NW to connect, if possible, in LAX, SFO or SEA to maximize upgradeable time flying over mainland and minimize "over the water" sardine time.
