probably targeted to people that are not elite so that CO can dilute the elite pool.

i'm gold on CAL but have not flown them in awhile, I moved and fly MCO DFW as CAL has no direct flights I am on AA.
In a few weeks I see AA fares through the roof for my desired travel dates (from 200 to 850) so I thought I take the CAL challenge
and at least keep my status on them for awhile

It is a targeted promotion, but not just to non-Elites. The number of required trips varies. I think I have heard mention of as many as 6 trips being required. No Q or T fares.
The cities vary with your home airport location. There are other threads that give more details.

Basically, you got immediate silver status. To maintain it, you had to fly 3 r/t in a fare class other than Q or T and do so before 11/15/02. To jump to gold, you had to fly 6 such roundtrips. There was no Platinum challenge.
Also, unless they've re-announced it to combat DL's recent double miles elite challeng... the entry date for this CO promotion has long since passed.

There may be more than one promotion at play here. I received a 4 r/t to platinum promotion based on non q/t fares to selected cities. I am currently gold, and was on pace only to get silver for next year, but with the current promotion will get platinum. I would guess that I was targeted for the platinum status based on the fact that much of my travel is at full-fare.

Well, I guess that there are several variations going around. I am Platinum and qualified easily last year. My offer letter said 5 R/Ts to a long list of cities. The list contains most of the major U.S. cities at some distance from my home base in Houston. Notable exceptions are Las Vegas, Reno, Portland, Seattle, and New Orleans. Dallas is on the list, but you usually can get a non q/t fare to Los Angeles for the same price as a Dallas non q/t fare.
On another note, has anyone tried to get CO to add a city to their list? For instance, Oakland and Sacramento are not on my list, but San Francisco and San Jose are. If I were going to Sacramento, it would be nice to fly there direct rather than going to San Francisco or San Jose and driving. Houston to San Jose and Sacramento are priced similarly in V class.

Once again I must show my ignorance. What about all of these PLAT and GOLD challenges. I have been CO Silver for three years and have already qualified (39 segs) for Silver 2003. I have never received any type of offer to better my elite standing. Are these offers retricted to flyers based out of CO hubs? My home airport is SDF and CO is not a huge player here. Would this have something to do with it? Would it be the fact I can usually book two weeks out at a lower fare? Can someone enlighten me...Thanks

I'm a Platinum on my way to earn Gold for next year. I too received the promotion in which I'd automatically renew my Platinum status if I flew 4 r/t's to a slew of cities --none of which are resort-focussed (Las Vegas or Orlando) nor targeted to cities I regularly fly to (EWR-SEA.) The catch was not to fly in Q/T.
I've wrapped-up buying my 4 tickets to my targeted cities which included 2 EWR-LAX runs for a $220 B fare. Looking at how many miles I'd accrue from those trips as well as my non-qualifying city visits, it looks like I'd be a solid Gold about 5-10k miles short of Platinum status.
So in effect, this challenge ends up costing me $600 to go from Gold (down from Platinum this year) to Platinum in '03.
