DCA and BOS shuttle

I was coming thru EWR today and heard that starting June 05, all DCA and BOS flights will be going in to Terminal A at EWR. Anyone else heard this?

Not surprising. They want to make sure they use as many gates in A as possible to prevent LCCs and hold the gates for those large banks of flights.

I fly to DCA 4 times a month - Terminal A doesnt have an elite line and their lines are longer. If this is done I may opt to start taking the train.

Funny enough while flying from DCA-EWR today, I overherd a CO employee talking with another CO employee about the move.

He was less than pleased and kept saying that it made sense for BOS but not for DCA.

The other GA said that if the DFW-ORD-ATL people could make connections than so could the DCA people. She also pointed out that Term. A is nearer the airtrain that Term C.

I would hardly call DCA and BOS flights from EWR as shuttles. The schedule is not continuous and the type of aircraft change. Not anything like the DL and US shuttles. I view these as regularly scheduled flights.

CO: Don't do it.
An --extra-- TSA screening for already TSA-hassled DCA passengers is an unmistakable disincentive to travel through EWR.

Note that at LGA the DL shuttle has for years (always?) operated from its own terminal way over on the other side of the runways. But DL essentially operates the Shuttle as an independent airline. I recently tried to ticket a DL to DLShuttle connection at LGA, and it priced as two totally separate tickets (even though routing via JFK was valid).

And I believe that AA at LGA has two separate piers without any airside connection, with mainly Eagle flights (including DCA/BOS) on one pier and mainline on the other.

I've never been in the US terminal at LGA. Are there airside connections between the Shuttle part and regular US?

Although I hate Newark - I do know that Terminal C is closer to the Amtrak/New Jersey Transit "airtrain" Rail Station than Terminal A.

Hopefully, the port authority and the TSA will realize an elite line is needed on the concourse with the added flights.

Yes, they are connected airside. So if you ever fly US mainline or express out of LGA, you can use the security line for the shuttle, which conventional wisdom says moves faster. There is a bus to the main terminal for pax connecting to/from UA flights.

IIRC the terminal is actually leased from CO.

And EWR has some of the worst screening in the country...

but it would make DCA-EWR-ORD/DFW/ATL/BOS connections pretty sweet. And I like the Term A P-Club (though it doesn't have draught beer).

Where and who did you hear this from? Continental is already meeting and exceeding the required gate utlization in Terminal A to prevent lose of the gate. This move would just make out lives worse and be really not fun.
I have personally never waited too long for TSA there, but an EA line would be nice. I could only imagine moving more flights if someone else were to pull out; that being so Continental could take up more gates...

I say, take the train anyway. I used to avoid the train because I am so comfortable with the airport routine... but one trip via rail and I am sold. Especially with the security lines at DCA... take the train.

I wouldn't say the same for NYC-BOS... no matter how you slice it, air is still the best bet between those two cities.

If you mean EWR's screening performs the worst in the country, based on those published "spot-checks", then I'd agree with you, but at Terminal C, I rarely wait more than a few minutes at any of the checkpoints, at any time of day. There are so many lanes that no matter how many people crowd in down there, they can process them relatively quick.

6am on Monday mornings. Nothing but elite flyers headed out to work and only two lanes open at the security concourses. The elite line is actually usually as long as the regular one, and TSA is in no hurry to move people through. Otherwise I agree that the lines move pretty well for elites.

As for the idea of moving it to terminal A, I used to be a Chicago commuter, and now I'm a Washington commuter. The PC in A is nice, but small. It is probably too small to handle the additional load of the added flights. I never really had an issue with the security lines there, but again, the added load will have to factor in. If they only have one of the three security lines running it could get nasty.
