Has anyone had any problems with CO's laptop power? (exploded laptops, etc. ?)

Just curious, as I dont want to fry my new laptop on its maiden voyage!

Good luck finding laptop power!

Where are you going and what type of plane are you on?

Joe (2 batteries with 3 1/2 hours power each unless I am using my DVD, then their life if halved).

Flight on a 777, according to the flight laptop power.

I also have two batteries for my dell. Also have a DVD. I'm hoping I can watch one movie and then do computer stuff on the plane if I'm battery only!

I use the Targus Universal Air/Auto Adapter with my Dell.

No problems at all.

Keith;

As long as you are in BF or the first several rows of 777 coach you will have power as long as you have the proper cord (not anything that came with your laptop.) Do a search on "empower" in GeneralTravel and you'll find tons of info. If you need more, just ask.

You wont have ELTS (Exploding Laptop Sydrome) as using the 14 volts from the airplane seat is just as safe as using an AC adaptor at home. BUT, on occasion the powerports will be "out"-- either individually or as a group. If your seat's outlet is out, you'll need to switch seats (if possible.)

If the green power led is not illuminated for any of the powerports on the plane they need to be reset and that is very easy for the flight crew to do BUT, try and ask the service manager in BF as they are the only one who will know what you are talking about. If you ask a regular crew person they may say they'll ask about it and then they may not, which is frustrating.

I have one too for my Compaq and love it! Unfortunately, I have never been on a plane with the power supply. If I am on NW, I'm always on DC-9, 757 or 737 and on CO, MD-80 or 737...:-(

I use the Targus in my car very often when I want to use my laptop or just charge it between the plane and a client site or the hotel.

I used the Targus Power adapter on my EWR-FRA-EWR 777 with a IBM Thinkpad 600X. The general rule on where the power ports are located are BusinessFirst and the first economy cabin in coach on 777s and 767s (NOT 757).

What I don't understand is why they don't include laptop power on ALL new planes especially the 737-700,800,900 Transcons. I know cost, but wouldn't it be MORE expensive to put it on later on?

BTW, I bought an Empower adapter at Radio Shack (which converts the empower port to cigarette lighter) then split the cigarette lighter with one going to my Targus adapter and one going to my travel charger for my Creative Labs Nomad Jukebox. I was a very happy man! (and it didn't explode, except for maybe the MILES of wires I had at my seat!)

Does anyone know WHY they couldn't just wire in a cigarette lighter and have to put in these "empower" outlets? Is it a safety thing? Cause it could be construed as a conspiracy by powers that be to force us to buy new adpaters!

I agree! I noticed on American's website that they are installing the power adapters on most of their aircraft, including the 737-800s, F-100s, and some MD-80s. I never fly American, but would love to have this benefit on Continental.
