I am actually a NW Elite, but my actual travel is pretty much split between NW and CO. NW doesn't have this problem. I can call them and upgrade my reservation even when it is unticketed and then pay cash at the airport.

I haven't flown coach on NW since I made elite, except for one voluntary downgrade sometime last year.

B747....your experience begs the question, why do you give them the business if you get treated that way? In the case of Phoenix, they are hardly the monopoly carriers, and as for Silver Elite, they practically give it away on both CO and NW.

B-747, I sincerely empathize with you. This is one of the reasons I'm afraid to jump ship from NW to CO. For me it has been nice to call, find the open FC seat and get it right there...
I've had the same positive experience as well on NW, which seems to combine the best of EUA and manual upgrades where warranted. On the two occasions where I've had to call to request an upgrade agents have been only too happy to do it. Last time I called the Gold line the whole thing was handled in less than a minute.

Makes you wonder why CO can't/won't do this if NW can.
