It all really depends on your particular fare. It can either be upgraded for 10,000 miles or not upgraded at all in advance.

Look who's back! Our old friend emmett_s! Now emmett, we all know that you are already an elite level member....I seem to recall the time you were asking about the elite line phone number so you could report your lost elite card. Or the time someone stole your elite luggage tags. Or the time they wouldn't let you into the President's Club because you lost your membership card. Now I see you want access to the first class line so mom doesn't have to wait.
Hope you enjoyed your dinner with your mom, emmett....after CO loses your upgrade I'm sure you'll think about how much better the food was than what you will be eating in coach!
