On purpose or not, I don NOT know - but I was booted from first into coach as a result of overbooking and it only happened to me once - but I do remember it - and NOT fondly!

I find it hard to believe they would do a random computer search. Why wouldn't they just look for several people (e.g. families) on one PNR in a low fare class? I can't imagine randomly selected a WorldPerks Elite paying a high fare for an involuntary bump.
My guess is that a random search for NW is Charlie the gate agent crossing people's names off a list.

They must have had some type of criteria for the computer to search for to pull people off. I agree it can't just pick and pull.

I seriously doubt they could base it on fare class/fare paid, either. Remember the stink people raised when UA tried to limit deep discounted coach pax in DSM to 1 carry-on while higher fare coach passengers got 2? If you treat coach passengers differently, you get into issues of inequity.
I seem to remember a "last to check in, first to be bumped" policy to choose who is denied boarding.

I haven't been through MEM in a while, but they may have opened an outlet at the airport.

They have 2 BBQ places....Corky's and Interstate BBQ. I think Interstate is the better of the two but Corky's is NW's choice for their catered flight....Porky's cute

If one was in first/business class, and got bumped down to coach, would it be realistic to ask for a systemwide upgrade voucher (to get F/B on a later flight) as some type of compensation for losing it on this flight?

He said after that that order of Elites determine who loses (ie: a Silver will be sent back to coach before a Gold would).

Jeff:
If you are talking about a paid FC or BF fare, then I'd say absolutely yes.
If it was an elite upgrade where you paid for coach and were given a free upgrade, then I doubt the airline would do it.
