Hi, fellow OnePass members and those who fly Continental,

I would like to ask you a question:

I have 2 tickets on CO. I used only an outbound portion of each ticket.


Who knows what are the rules for using the remainder?

I have called a couple times CO customer service and keep getting different answers.

Here are the answers I got from CO reps:

1) I can use this ticket if I fly the same itineary and pay $75 change fee (which is fine).
The caveat is I need to fly before ticket is a year old.

2) I can use this ticket if I fly the same itineary, pay $75 change fee, and the airfare price difference.

The caveat is I need to fly before ticket is a year old.

3) I can't use this ticket because it is more than 30 days since I had flown the outbound portion (April'99).

Which one of the above is correct? I am confused. The airfare basis is K.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

I thought you can apply the value of the ticket to any fare or route with payment of $75 fee.

The technically correct answer is #2. However, if a seat is available on that return in the same class of service, you will in effect get to fly the return portion for just the $75 fee.

So if you have a K return, you want to find K seats to avoid paying a fare differential.

Tute84, I believe the option of applying the money value of a ticket minus the $75 fee towards a new ticket only applies to wholly unused tickets. I do not believe you can do this with a ticket on which half has already been utilized.

#2 is the correct answer. When trying to use an unused portion of a ticket, you must fly the same itinerary. Unless of course it is a Y class ticket, then you can get a refund.

The only way to use the value of a discount ticket is if it is completely unused.

The correct answer is #3. On a restricted ticket, the return must occur no later than 30 days after the outbound. If you do change the return flight (but still occurring within 30 days of the outbound), a $75 change fee plus any difference in fare class, if applicable, will be charged (unless you are lucky and you get by without paying these fees, which does happen). The routing, however, must remain the same. You cannot change the routing on a restricted ticket.

An exception to this rule would be an e-saver fare, where the return is limited to the exact days offered in the specific e-saver offered.

You didn't happen to use those 2 outbound ticket portions to avoid the minimum stay requirement on cheapo tickets? That would be a no-no according to both the Contract of Carriage, and OnePass program rules.

To OLD Gold : I have not used these two tickets to avoid Sat. night stay or something like that. They are two independent tickets which i happen to utilize only the outbound portion.

What bugs me that I was finally able to use the second half of one of these tickets. The fare basis is B.
It is CHEAPER than the K fare basis ticket. The latest answer I got from the Elite rep: "There are no K fare basis tickets anymore. This ticket is worthless." :-(
O, well.

No more "K" tickets? I looked at ITN and there are K tickets on all routes I checked with seats availble in this bucket. It seems like the rep was just trying to get rid of you.

I wouldnt make an issue of this. You are violating all sorts of Continental rules by not using the return portions of these tickets ("throw away tickets").

It is odd how many different answers that you have received here. My answer would be that within the rules of the original fare ticket (could be 2 weeks, 30 days, etc.) you can change the return flight for $75 (booked in the same class of service). You do not have to pay the difference in price. The only time that the difference in price comes up is when you don't use any portion of the ticket and you need to buy a completely new ticket.
