What does Y really mean?
What does booking a flight with a Y class really mean, other than being very expensive?
I am forced to use a corporate travel agent for booking, and when I check the class of the flight, I on occasion end up with a Y ticket.
My travel is primarily ERJ’s, so I have experienced there is no difference in cabins.
So what does it mean to be traveling on a Y ticket for Elite and non-Elite travelers
?

One benefit is you'll earn elite status 50% faster. Another is you can change your flight at any time for no fee.

It is usually refundable/changeable without penalty. On bigger planes, it is more easily upgraded. It often gets you up-front (same seats but closer to the door) seating even on ERJ's. And it often gets more credit towards elite status.
For me it is just the penalty for last minute bookings or the cost of flexibility.

Don't forget that buyin' a full Y fare entitles you to eliteAccess

A full Y should get you an ug to first. Unfortunately you are stuck on an RJ with no F seats. More EQM with Y. Hope that does you some good.

I believe that Y only gets you upgraded to First if you're an Elite.
Also, to the OP, are you sure you're really booked in Y. On CO boarding passes, it says Y if you're in coach, no matter what booking code you used. So, are you really on a Y fare basis code, or just in coach?

Buyin' a Y fare gets you eliteAccess which gets you on the bottom of the list for standby "space available (unlimited) first class upgrades", as well as the "no middle seat guarantee"
