You got it!!!

It is usually refundable/changeable without penalty. On bigger planes, it is more easily upgraded. It often gets you up-front (same seats but closer to the door) seating even on ERJ's. And it often gets more credit towards elite status.

For me it is just the penalty for last minute bookings or the cost of flexibility.
