Whats the best way you have found to snag emergency row seating on long haul flights?

Plat or luck
On a 777 the first bulkhead behind BF is gate check in only. The second bulkhead over the wings behind the bathrooms is for Platinums only or gate check in. Good luck b/c you sure as hell won't clear the upgrade list no matter how hard you try.
