Whats the best way you have found to snag emergency row seating on long haul flights?

Call CO and request or check in online early and hope its available. Always ask when you get to the airport as well. All those methods have worked for me. Calling CO has been the most effective for me.

On a 777 the first bulkhead behind BF is gate check in only. The second bulkhead over the wings behind the bathrooms is for Platinums only or gate check in. Good luck b/c you sure as hell won't clear the upgrade list no matter how hard you try.
