Well I tried the "ask in different places" routine to get both my grandmother and my sister upgraded this afternoon, but it was a no-go. I think my biggest mistake was just being too honest, not doing enough to hide the fact that I was trying to UG two companions.

I did manage to get one of them upgraded, though, so we had 8D-E and 16J (bulkhead aisle) on the 777, which made for a pretty nice game of musical chairs going down to IAH. Hopefully we didn't annoy the other pax too much by our occasional visits to each other's seats. The FAs certainly didn't seem to mind, and were absolutely superb on this flight!

The 777 BF seats are pretty darn nice, too. This was my first time up front on the 777, and I've got to find a way to get myself up there for my next TLV trip.

The most I've been able to get up was 5 on a EWR-LAS flight last year (I think it was a Saturday night flight, hence why F was so empty to begin with.)

I think multiple companions was an issue about 2 years ago; the agents then were marking boarding passes to reflect a companion upgrade was listed/issued... but now that it's possible to print multiple boarding passes from a variety of places easily, I've noticed they've given-up.

Florida bound routes from EWR seem to be easier than trans-continental flights for multiple upgrades... so as long as there's available inventory, it'll happen. The only difficulty arises when you're on a popular route on a peak time typically loaded with full Y's or Platinum Elites.
Thanks Weatherboy,

I'll forward this string to Corporate Security and programing for investigation. I know there MUST be a way for this not to happen. Most all of us in EWR cross reference the PNR's because there is obviously a need to do so.

Thumbs up EWR very-non-compliant

While I've noticed other cities adding notes to cross-reference PNRs for the upgrades, EWR is the most non-compliant city out there. You don't even need to show your elite card or even mention your name --just say "hi, can you give so-and-so a Platinum companion upgrade" and they add the name to the list then.

But anyhow, the "unlimited" upgrades are only as unlimited as there are available seats. If there's other Platinums in-line for upgrades, they will always get them before companions, regardless of how legitimate those companions are.

This is not true! There're all kinds of permutations, but a platinum companion who checks in two hours before a flight will still be higher on the list than a real platinum who buys a ticket 90 minutes before. And in ANY circumstance, a platinum upgrade trumps all legitimate golds and silvers on the list...

It Can Be Done

good luck, and send an update on your results. i will be trying the same thing with my mother and brother on my upcoming xmas flights.
i know this thread is old, but i just returned from xmas.

on our return, i added my mother to the list at he check in desk and then requested to have my brother added at the gate (i had a plan, for the agents query... "do you already have someone on the list?").

at check in i was told i could only add one, but that only 4 of 18 seats were sold and that only 3 people were on the list.

therefore, i had no problem attempting to get two cmpanions up'd and i was prepared to tell the gate agent, if questioned, that the only reason i was asking for two was that i was told FC was completely empty.

they ended up adding my brother no questions asked.

we were all able to return home from a hectic week with family in FC. it was nice and if i could (without getting people in trouble), id write a letter thanking CO. also, there were 6 uniformed crew in FC (i havent seen that in years)

to make a long story short... it can be done, just depends on the flight and the agents.
