Upgrade using miles and $ question
I am waitlisted for a BusinessFirst upgrade on a EWR-HKG itinerary.
The miles were deducted from my account, but my credit card was not charged.
Aren't both transactions supposed to happen when an itinerary is waitlisted for upgrade?

No, you will pay the copayment when you check in.

Out of curiosity, is this a recent change? (say, to align with UA). I used miles+money to upgrade a CO flight late last year, and my CC was charged at the time the upgrade was applied, not at check-in.

Can't really answer your question, but in January, I had the CC charged when the upgrade went through day of travel, not when the miles were taken.

When Seat Clears
I believe the charge occurs when the seat (or seats) clear
Otherwise the points are redeposited if you don't get cleared

This is the UA policy; on CO it was policy that the CC charge and miles deduction both happen at the time of request. It doesn't always work that way and they generally charge you the correct amount in the end, but CO policy is to charge both miles and co-pay at the time of the request.
Check the reservation online and make sure it has the "this segment is waitlisted" entry on the reservation as that's really what matters in terms of making sure you're on the list correctly. If that's not there then call in and have the agent figure out why.

I thought that my cc was charged at the time of waitlist on a previous itinerary but I wasn't certain.
The continental.com reservation does indeed show that the segments are waitlisted - so I think I'm good to go.

Strange, I was charged both the miles and CC hit at the same time last month for CO86 PVG to EWR flight. I was waitlisted on the flight too. I thought it was CO policy to charge both and refund if the upgrade isn't done.
