Opup experience

I fly infrequently and don't know much about how things work, so I'm wondering if my opup story is pretty standard or not.

I had an L ticket on an overbooked 1 AM LAS-IAH flight. As I was walking to the gate about 20 min before departure, I heard "Final boarding call" for my flight, followed by "Flight is closed" over the speakers. As I hurried to the gate, I saw the person in front of me check in normally at the gate. When I got there, the GA asked for my boarding pass and handed me back a new one with a first class seat!

I find it kind of odd that I was randomly selected for an upgrade to first class. I hadn't been put on a volunteer list and I have no status with CO. Did I just get lucky?

This is not the first report of CO op-upping some random person for whatever reason. While most carriers do this by status, many CO employees don't seem to have status on their radar, so stuff like this happens.

Either that or they were overbooked in back and had to push someone up anyway.

And of course, welcome to FlyerTalk!

Never miss a chance, do you. Of course, the most likely explanation is that all elite passengers had already been upgraded through EUA or otherwise. Most carriers do not have an automatic upgrade process for elites, so they process op-ups by status (sometimes) or randomly (sometimes).
