Transfer ticket to someone else?
My elderly mother canonnot use her non-refundable CO ticket for December to Hawaii and most likely will not fly in the future due to medical issues. The ticket was appx $500. Can the ticket be transferred to someone else, perhaps with by paying a fee to CO?
FYI: She did not take family advice to buy the travel insurance policy.

Please use the search feature in the future.
You should cancel the reservation and book her a one way intra-Texas or other cheap non refundable ticket that she will presumably be a no-show for, and the balance of the original ticket value will be refunded to you on a travel certificate that can be used for any traveler.

You should cancel the reservation and book her a one way intra-Texas or other cheap non refundable ticket that she will presumably be a no-show for, and the balance of the original ticket value will be refunded to you on a travel certificate that can be used for any traveler.

BTW, I did use the search feature for CO and there is a lot discussion on nonrefundable tickets but not much on transferring tickets to someone else. That is our hope we can transfer the value to a family member, if not, your idea sounds perfect! Thanks!

I don't know if CO has a "name change fee". Probably.
In the alternative, for a fee free option if another female wants to take the trip and could do it with just a carry on (or have their luggage checked in by someone else who might be going on this trip), that "other female" could print Mom's boarding pass and stick it in her pocket. She could then buy a daily lounge pass and ask for a gate pass in her own name, or could just ask for a gate pass to accompany someone to the gate (perhaps there is a child going on the trip, etc).
She clears security with the gate pass, then uses Mom's boarding pass to fly to and from Hawaii.
Mom's OnePass account could get suspended if they were caught, but the changes of getting caught are pretty low. I've never had my ID checked when boarding.

Here is what I saw on the CO.com website that may be relevant to your situation:
Refund Request for Non-refundable Tickets Unplanned Event
Continental will refund change fees and tickets in certain cases. All requests must be received before the expiration of your ticket and must be accompanied by proper documentation (see below). Once received, if applicable, a refund will be provided to the original form of payment minus a $50 USD processing fee*. This policy applies to the illness or death of the traveler, traveling companion, or immediate family members.
*Except where DOT 14 CFR Part 382 applies

You may want to read the fare rules. I happened to read the fare rules for one of my tickets and it is refundable for illness. It was a B fare, but it is at least worth taking a look at to see what exactly non refundable means and what exceptions apply.
