Copa questions regarding Automatic Upgrades.
A little back ground first. I booked tickets on Copa for a trip to Lima this Thanksgiving for me and my partner. Now I happen to be Platinum on Continental but my partner is Gold on Star alliance. After reading up some on this forum I found out that I should split our reservation in to two separate locator numbers so that I can get the automatic upgrade 4 days out if available. Seems if youre on the same record locator, the person with the least amount of status will dictate where you are in the upgrade list.
So now I have another dilemma, what is the best way to try and get my partner upgraded too? Remember he has no status on Continental except for Star Gold. Is there a way to get the upgrade to go through for him before we get to the airport? Will we have to go through the airport lottery? Seems that he would be second on the list if its done at the airport. Platinums, then Platinums traveling partner, then golds then golds traveling partner etc.
Im only asking because its Copa and not Continental. I think the procedure is exactly the same but not 100% sure.
Also, do we get to use the Star Alliance Lounge? Copa isnt officially part of that Alliance so not sure there either.
Thanks

There is no such thing as *G upgrades. Unless he has status on CO or UA he's not in line for EUA.
You can have him added at the airport for a companion upgrade, just like on CO metal.
For lounges you can use PClubs along the way, including PTY, but partner lounges only if you are ticketed in F, and no other *A lounges as a *G since you will not be departing on a *A flight.

For a single data point, I am a CO Plat and am 7/8 on CM upgrades (LAX-PTY-GRU) and back twice, and 1/1 on companion upgrades (PTY-LAX). Good luck.
