Itinerary changed without asking
I had booked CMH-EWR-ATL with a return ATL-EWR-CMH on Co.com without any manipulation - I paid more to go through EWR instead of CLE so I could get the extra miles. Both had over an hour stopover. However, I got an email saying that my itinerary was changed and the return was changed to ATL-CLE-CMH.
Needless to say, the price did not change, but I will end up getting less miles. I could call to try to get rebooked on the original itinerary, but I will not get the 12A (ERJ) and the 21A (737-500) seats I originally had.
Why did this happen and is there any way for me not be getting shortchanged?
Thanks

Call
Call and tell the agent that you do not want the altered routing, that you made the original reservation for specific reasons (which you do not need to specify) and want it back. No guarantees, but seems like your only shot.

Do the original flights still exist? Sounds like a schedule change rebooking to me.

Tell the agent that is was a non-refundable ticket and that you need their credit card number to process the $150 change fee

Before you call, do some research and find the flights that you want. Then, call, politely explain that there was a schedule change and that you don't like the flights that "the computer" reassigned you to, and ask nicely but firmly that you would like to be accommodated on these particular flights.
I just had to do this with AS and it worked out fine.

Does anyone have any experience when flight changes leave you "stranded" overnight? Traveling over Thanksgiving, my direct domestic connection was removed from the schedule and the only options left are a one stop red-eye or a next day direct. Can Continental be persuaded into giving hotel/meal vouchers?

Thanks
Thanks for the suggestions - I called and they said the itinerary / PNR was locked down because of a code I had used while booking on CO.com and they could not change it.

I had a SAN-IAH-CDG booked and when I checked-in, I was told it was changed to SAN-EWR-CDG because they needed a few SAN-IAH seats. The agent asked if I minded, and I said other than the 300 miles shortage I didnt really care. She proceeded to upgrade me for taking the EWR flight. It was more than worth it

You need to call back. Don't call regular reservations, though. Call the web support desk at 800.300.1547 option 3. CO changed the reservation, not you -- and they unilaterally changed it to something that is unacceptable to you.
