SWU future question

Hey there,
I read a few threads in this regards but still it looks a bit weird to me.
The SWU can be used if there's an R class available.
For the fun of it, I checked various routes such as IAH-TLV, IAH-GRU, IAH-LHR which are the routes I fly the most. on very few I could find R available (by checking the upgrade feature on co.com).
Am i doing something wrong (or misunderstanding the concept) or is it true that the SWU will have much more availability on domestic routes rather than int'l.

Thanks!

On popular international routes you will likely need to waitlist for BF. Many report that most of the time that BF upgrades eventually clear.

Plus you may need to check closer to flight time.

Correct -- this is the exact same fare class used for mileage upgrades as well.

Probably not.

Where did you get that idea from? I've never ever heard or seen anything to indicate that advance upgrade availability was greater on domestic than international, or vice versa for that matter.

Just based it on some random searching....

The OP has a point regarding domestic vs international. I'm sure that IAH-DEN will have far more "R" availability than EWR-HKG...

While I do expect this to be the case, I hope the use of these SWUs is relatively painless. It is a benefit being offered to CO's most-frequent fliers and, from a customer service standpoint, the benefiti should be "real" and easy-to-use.

But I would expect more R availability on EWR-HKG than EWR-LAX, so it really depends on the route, and I'm not sure it's fair to generalize either way.
