What will happen to Y/B Complimentary Upgrades once Unlimited Domestic Upgrades are implemented?
United's Y/B complimentary upgrades were also complimentary in that they didn't require 500 mile upgrades, they still processed according to the upgrade processing, not instant upgrades.

Of all of the changes coming to the program, the loss of instant upgrades on Y/B/M fares is the biggest negative of all. It is quite usual out of IAH to pay $1000+ for domestic RT fares (even purchased weeks in advance) if you have less than a 3-night stay, and no Saturday night. It was always a bit of consolation that those fares are typically B or M fares with instant upgrades. No more

There has been no announced decision on this front yet. I'd wait until details of the new FF program are announced before deciding what the losses of that are.

HYPOTHETICALLY if they drop this benefit, it could actually be considered a positive for most Platinums. It means that there won't be Golds or Silvers who confirmed instant upgrades ahead of you. And you'll still be near the top of the EUA priority when they do run it. This assumes that elite level really becomes the first factor in prioritizing elites.

Of course I understand the appeal of a confirmed upgrade, particularly if you're deciding between two flights. Guessing the EUA chances on each is a frustrating exercise. But on the whole, you'll still probably find there to be more first class seats available if they drop the YBM-UPs.

Also worth noting UA's previous Y/B-Up policy only applied to proper YUA and BUA fares. This was fare more limiting than CO's policy, which applies to any Y/B fare.
These UA -UP fares were never instant upgrades, they were straight purchases into F, which you had to search for or accept the buy-up into F in one was offered.

And UA's Y/BUA upgrades were never automatic at purchase; the flyer went into the same waitlist with other upgrades with the only difference being that no upgrade instruments (certs/miles) were needed.
