If I'm booking an award ticket for a friend in Y (non-status) DAM-LHR-EWR (BD, CO respectively) stop in EWR then EWR-CLE on CO and returning CLE-LGA/JFK-CAI-DAM (CO, MS respectively), what is the baggage allowance on each leg? I've called CO 3 times and have literally gotten a different answer each time.

BMI told me the baggage allowance on the DAM-LHR portion depends on the partner carrier's allowance--but it isn't clear what CO's allowance is on a DAM-EWR routing.

I'm quite surprised that BD says the CO policy defines this one; generally the operating carrier's policy is the rule at play. If it is CO policies for TATL travel then it should be the 1x50# bag free policy.

For the EWR-CLE and CLE-LGA segments the rule is the CO domestic segment rule, which is no free bags for non-elites.

JFK-CAI-DAM will be the MS rules.

Agree that the BD advice is a bit .

However, if the OP's profile is correct (CO PE), then this award ticket should still allow the non-elite to utilize the elite baggage allowance. Hence, EWR-CLE and CLE-LGA will permit 3 x 70 lb.

Unless CO's fixed this in the last month or so..

I am travelling IAH-SAL this Thursday and I have received my upgrade to Intl Biz (Platinum Elite).

I am a little confused to the verbiage of CO.com baggage allowance and I quote:

OnePass Platinum and Gold Elite members and Star Alliance Gold members**
First Class, International Business, and Latin Business Class customers**

** May check three bags at no charge as long as each bag is a maximum 70 lbs (32 kg) and 62 linear inches (157 cm) (total length + width + height). For tickets purchased on or after October 19, 2009 for travel commencing October 27, 2009, First class, International Business, and Latin Business Class customers may check 2 bags at no charge as long as each bag is a maximum of 50 lbs (23 kg) and 62 linear inches (157cm ) as measured above. Ticket must reflect confirmed seat for segment in which customer is checking in.


Which is it?

You get the higher of the allowances you are qualified for. So your *G status gets you 3x70#. If you were a silver or a non-elite in the forward cabin you'd only get 2x50#.

Actually no...that's not how I interpert it. Travel commences before October 27, 2009 gets the 3x70 free. If you booked your flight After October 19, 2009for travel in 2010 then you only get 2x50.

I.e. if you booked your travel in december for travel in april. You only get 2x50 free

You're reading it wrong. The dates apply only to non-Star Gold First class, International Business, and Latin Business Class travelers, hence the comma.

Star Gold customers always receive 3 at 70#.

You're welcome to that interpretation, but it isn't correct.

You added the word "before" into the policy on your own; that isn't CO's doing. *G has had the 3x70# policy in place pretty much since the day of the move to the new program. It is only non-*G elites in F that had their allowances cut.
