CO to Bud
What would be the best fare to purchase on CO from NY to Budapest giving me the best chance for an U/G? I'm a GE. Much appreciated

CO doesnt fly to BUD so youd have to fly to a *A hub in Europe and connect there. Which will mean the UP will be only to/from the European Hub = IMO if you are based in the NY area youd do best with Coach the whole way, as its not really that long of a flight say EWR-FRA to me at least to justify spending alot more $$$ for a higher fare basis, or for having to pay the co-pay which from an M fare is $250 & 20k up to $500 & 20k per way.
I dont think we can as of yet Upgrade on *As European Carriers and even if we could the Biz section on the intra-Europe flights is usually a coach seat with an empty seat next to you

Since they're selling middle seat in exit rows on one hour flights for about $50, a $150 bottle of beer would be perfectly in line with the Smisek strategy...

You certainly can upgrade on the majority of *A airlines if you're on a Y/B fare. This is a standard *A benefit, and there is no co-pay - just miles.Additionally, like many places CO does not fly to, you can fly there on a CO ticket, and most likely on a CO codeshare end to end. You don't have to buy the *A connection separately or anything like that. As an example of a CO EWR-BUD fare:

But all kidding aside, I was actually trying to make a serious point, namely that if you price yourself out of your market, then you end making less money.
You can sell a beer for $150 and it would strike most people as a little ridiculous. Of course, you could also price it at $25 million, for that matter.
But the price point needs to be set at a level where people will buy.
Just like there are likely to be very few takers of $150 bottles of beer, the same likely applies to sitting in a middle seat in an exit row for $50 for an hour flight.
If Smisek is really serious about making money, he would price these seats at about $10. Sure, that's a heck of a lot less than $50, except if people are really buying them.
Then it's $10 more than $50...

It might be worth it on the return, depending on your *A elite status and thus your lounge access and baggage allowance when checking in at BUD.

Also, I would definitely pay extra $$$ for some premium beer selections on the plane. $15-$20 for Chimay (in the smaller corked bottle size) would happen regularly. The look on people's faces around me would be priceless. $20 on beer?!? Heh.

Just because there are people sitting in the exit row doesn't mean they paid anything. If they are CO OP Gold or Plats they still receive these seats for free.

When Continental puts out their quarterly income statement, do you think they will report this so we can see how well it is working? I know they talked in December about the buy ups to first producing several millions in extra revenue.
