Greetings from foggy SVO. I hope you guys had a good time! Maybe I'll be in town next time and the fabulous Mrs. Xyzzy and I can join you...

Jumpgate Aug 3, 2008 8:10 am

Thank you!

Thank you all for coming! I had an awesome time. I'm glad you liked Newark and have a new opinion of it. It's getting to be a nicer and nicer place to live and hang out.

Pictures will be coming soon ...

Anybody out there who has to report a stolen car? :p ;)

Thanks, jumpgate, for organizing this. It was a fun 'do and I think everyone enjoyed the venue, the company and the vibrant, funky, international (and safe) Ironbound area.

Thanks Again Jumpgate

It was a pleasure to visit with old and new friends on Saturday, and we really enjoyed the venue.

We wound up NOT having dinner afterward, we were full from the tapas.

Jesse if you send me your email address via PM I will send you the photos I took.

Thanks again!!

Best,

Art and JoAnn

Thanks for dragging me out to Jersey Jumpgate! Before the DO, Newark=EWR to me, but now I see that maybe there's a bit more to it(including cheap rent and good bars/restaurants!) Despite admitting that, I'll take the initiative and host the next DO in Manhattan. ;)

I won't give away all of the fun details just yet, but you should have seen the 3 locals and a Canuck trying to get from Newark PATH/PENN to the UWS. If nothing else, we gave YEGcited the grand tour of downtown and the quintessential NYC cab experience.

Shell NYC, please allow me to start divulging some of the fun details in this mini-do report.

What can I say other than I am thrilled that I was able to attend EWR do! I had a great time on Saturday evening in Newark and Saturday night in Manhattan! Thank you all so much for the great time and conversations (oh, those conversations!). It ran the gamut from teaching Canadian provinces and capitals to reminiscing about the worst NHL teams of all time (kind of like I never left Canada at all haha). Oh, and I did hear a tad bit of griping of a certain airline that night, which brings me to some weird coincidences. When I was at my lodgings, I spoke to a couple of German guys who mentioned they flew from FRA to PHL a couple of days ago. That piqued my interest a bit so I asked them which airline they flew (with 99% knowledge of their answer in my mind) and they said US Airways. They said it was their worst flight ever (apparently, there are huge catering issues in FRA with Lufthansa's catering company which didn't help their cause). They said the service was poor and the whole inflight experience was extremely disappointing.

Then, to bookend this trip, as I'm waiting for my flight from YYC to YEG on Monday night, an elderly man comes up to the WestJet counter requesting some assistance with his bag. He is helped right away and then the man praises WestJet for the great service they have provided him over the years. Honestly, this man could not stop gushing over them. Then he rambles on a bit about how he's dealt with poor service on other airlines, listing them off (some of which have been out of business for many years), and then he said at the end that US Airways was the worst airline he had been on! Apparently he was on a flight where they aborted the landing 2 or 3 times and the passengers were never given an explanation why, and I guess that still sticks in his craw to this day.

Am I the only one who thinks those coincidences are kind of bizarre?!?

Now, back to the shenanigans after the Do!
Schell NYC (+1) and TravelManKen were nice enough to escort me back to Manhattan. Well, maybe I should have politely declined their New York welcome because it became an excercise (literally!!!) in futility. :D

I can't remember how many subway lines we were on, or how many flights of stairs we ran up and down, only to end up at the farthest possible point from the Upper West Side that we could have been on the south part of Manhattan! All the while, I'm pulling and carrying my carry-on suitcase all the way. I think I lost about 5 pounds that night (and I really can't afford to lose much weight) ;)

At the end of all that running around, we decided to take a cab and what an experience that was! A very aggressive driver making quick lane switches and travelling at a breakneck speed, just awesome!!!

I made the comment in the cab that I am getting an authentic NY experience just a little while after entering Manhattan with 3 Manhattanites as company. You can't put a price on that! (Especially since they covered my cab ride, subway fare and drinks that night) :)

Which leads me to my final thank yous. Gracias to all who picked up the tabs at the restaurant and the bars! That was extremely gracious of you and totally unnecessary. :)

And merci to Jumpgate for organizing this Do and allowing me to experience downtown EWR, a place I probably never would have visited on my own.

You have all left me with a great first impression of the New Jersey - New York area ^

This is precisely why I just status-matched from US to CO.

I wish I could have made this DO, but hopefully there will be other opportunities in the future to formally and informally welcome CO to the *A!

Nope! The word about US Airways is out and the bad luck I have had with them has evidently spread! :p
