I attended the Brooklyn Reality Tour on Saturday, now I'm ready to make the long journey to Newark from Manhattan :)

Excellent TravelManKen! I'll add you to the list.
99.99% of people who put down Newark have never been there (the airport doesn't count). |
Wow -- sounds like fun. I'd love to attend, but I'll be away then (returning the 3rd). I'll wish y'all nasdarovya from Moscow :p

I am sorry to say that I cannot make this Do, but perhaps we can have a Do Part Deux in either once CO has officially joined?
|
Are current CO flyers who are eager to make the switch to *A invited to the DO as well?

CO Plat here, be happy to help with the little knowledge that I have :) If rubbernyc is going, I'm going as well. I'm CO Plat MM and UA 1K MM, so this switch from ST to *A presents some interesting decisions; from my perspective, I'd love to see the relationship get REALLY close, sort of like AF/KL, and have the programs merged. I need a "lifetime Platinum" on *A ... Not totally disappointed at CO leaving ST; I'm set there for life anyway with FB Lifetime Platinum and it was getting kind of weird maintaining 2 platinums in the same alliance ... and dropping temporarily out of OW status. Newark downtown is NOT nearly as bad as people might imagine; it is actually a bit of a "find" for people who never thought of visiting. Frankly if it were not in the veritable shadow of Manhattan, Newark would have more respect. Museum is OK, the downtown baseball stadium is cool, and the arts center is nothing to sneeze at (and the Theater Square Grill/Calçada at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (973) 642-1226 www.theater-square-grill.com got a good review from the NY Times last month. I think ending up in a bar is a great idea. We could start in one of the quintessential Ironbound restaurants. In addition to Suzanne Vega, Ironbound is known for Spanish, Portuguese and Brazilian restaurants. My preferences, in descending order, are: Adega Grill(a notch above the standard Portuguese and good wines; "Adega" means wine cellar in Portuguese, but probably a bit too much for a 'do), Casa Vasca (interesting because it's Basque), Fornos of Spain (the best of the big, large places), Brasilia, Fernandes Steakhouse (Iberian-Brazilian steakhouse including an all you can eat rodizio option), Tony Da Caneca (yes, it's Spanish despite the name), Iberia Tavern and Iberia Peninsula, Spanish Tavern (probably the most popular of the big, large places), Spain, Mompou (Tapas, which means small dishes and lots of drinking), Spanish Sangria Restaurant, Don Pepe, in that order; there are others I have not dined at, including Beira Mar, Sagres, Sol Mar. All are hearty, inexpensive, good drinking and good and an ethnic experience. |

Excellent!
Maybe I'll arrange for this to be a little later, so people could eat/drink at a good downtown or Ironbound restaurant should they prefer to. I live in Newark and I like it a lot more than I thought I would (I moved here mainly for the convenience). Agreed about Adega - really great but kinda small. Sagres is a great outdoor place to eat. Brasilia is large too and has an amazing rodizio. |
