I have always been interested in attending and I am often in town when many of them happen. But, I just think it would be.... weird since I am only 18: I can't even get into a place that serves alcohol.
So what type of demographic do DOs they generally attract? Would I be completely out of place?
Cheers,

Cheers,

At least the way you organize the context of your posts. Oh well only if I could turn the clock back and be that young again.

To OP, I've been to both a number of low key local events here in YEG as well as much larger full on FT organized do in TLS and the spirit is much the same; regular folks who share a passion for travel meet to swap stories and experiences. Among those who knew each other I didn't feel out of place at my first big event this past Spring in TLS and everyone was very welcoming and friendly so I'd encourage you to take one in if the location and timing work.

I took a 17 year old family friend to the Seoul Do two months ago. He was a bit apprehensive about meeting other FT'ers, but ended up having an absolute blast with them! He's always asking me if I'm going back next year

In fact, this member liked them so much that he went on to host some of the best we've had - search for Catman DO. Truly if you ever want some input from one of the members most responsible for spreading the joy of meeting other members, this Catman guy is the one. We all owe Catman a sincere thank you. Thank you CM, thank you.
sadiqhassan... there is no rule that to attend a Flyertalk Do that you have to drink. Not all dos are in bars. There are Flyertalkers old and young who don't drink at all (except for water or Pepsi...
)
In fact, one of them coming up on Dec 21 is right in your neighborhood: NY, NY. And it's not in a bar but a little French Bistro called La Bonne Soupe

If you are around come join us. It's a good mixed group of world travels and locals and a Cat Hair covered Host.
I was apprehensive abouta ttending my first do in Boston almost ten years ago. (Oh my god! Is it really almost a decade!) I met some nice people and, over time, met one Flyertalker I call my Big Bruddar and one of my bestest friends.
If anything you can get a few traveling tips and maybe make a new friend or two.
Good luck!

If anything there is to be said about Do's everyone should be able to meet someone they have something in common with. As I said you never know who you can meet at dos. In my case I came away with:
*A Big Bruddar and very very dear friend
*lots of good friends
*Been to many places I would not ahve thought of going.
*Learned some things about life and doing some things you never imagined doing.
Actually Randy I should tahnk you for creating this board and enriching many lives... one Cat haired covered sitter in particular.

One of the FlyerTalkers whom I hold in the highest esteem was only ten-years old when I first met him on FT. I have since then met him in real life several times and was even more impressed with him each time, and I am old enough to be his grandmother, almost old enough to be his great-grandmother.
If you enjoy the people you meet on line, you will probably enjoy them in real life and they will enjoy you. We are all a pretty adventuresome lot.

My 13 and 11 yr old sons met SD1KFlyer in Bali, parnel in YYZ, KenHAAmer, mtacchi in YVR.
When they were 12 and 10, they got to meet a top management
staffer at Flying Dutchman HQ in AMS.

The age variance at a DO has always sort of reminded me a wedding. Though to be perfectly honest there are not many pre-teens, toddlers nor babies.

You should go to one
I'm really painfully shy, although once folks meet me they don't think so, but it was a real, real challenge to walk into a restaurant the first time I met the San Diego group.
I had anxiety for days beforehand...and all for naught. They were warm, welcoming, loving and friendly! Although I'm still anxious about meeting lots of people all at once, I find that FTers as a whole are a great group. There's always something to talk about and listening to everyone's stories is wonderfully entertaining!
