Tickets? You mean you have to pay to get in there?

Ok, I received my confirmation this afternoon (such things are never really confirmed until you get the bit of paper saying so) - DEFINITELY umpiring at the Aussie Open, from Day 1 (14 January) until Day 10 (23 January), and then planning on staying around for a few extra days.

I have indicated that I would like Saturday 19 January as an RDO, but such things are subject to such things as weather delays and so on, and we never really know until late the day before.

If we can get something planned, I will pass out my mobile phone number and email address to all who plan to attend, and we can then work from there.

Cheers,

Dave

I should add to this that a ground pass to the Ausiie Open is one of the BEST value tickets in world sport - it is a tad over AUD20, and gets you into several show courts, ao you will see some top quality matches. So I wouldn't worry about not being able to get tickets.

Perhaps we could organise this FT 'do' as a tennis day, with those attending actually watching the tennis (I might also bother to watch a bit of tennis, with an occasional "out" or "fault" call being made) and then we could wander off and play it by ear at the conclusion of play for the day.

(Sidebar: the way they work us, we have five squads of line umpires covering three courts, and three of the squads will be tasked to finish their courts off - so if they get a stack of 5-setters, they can be there rather late, likewise if they get a stack of 3-setters [for the men] or 2-setters [for the women] they could be finished early - so a finishing time is impossible to say. Rod Laver Arena will have two squads covering it, hour-on, hour-off, with night crew taking over at 1900. We get our court allocations when we get there in the morning.)

Thumbs up

We are only two hours east of Melb so there's a pretty good chance of getting there also. ^

as every year; I am in Melbourne @ the Australian Open the whole fortnight.

staying at the Victoria Hotel Melbourne, 215 Little Collins Street (A$ 139/night) Monday jan-14th through Monday jan-28th

tickets: as a livelong member of the Australian Davis Cup foundation, I was able to order my Rod Laver arena tickets months before the official sale date (and get guaranteed seats in the shadow area of the stadium). Australian Open tickets are, for the same day, also a free pass for public transportation in/around Melbourne.

flights: with TG in first-class (award tickets) ZRH-BKK-MEL-BKK-ZRH.

see also this Australian Open thread in OMNI

see you there?

We got our tix by buying corporate seats but went for the sunshine part on the side by preference (although that was before reading the dire warnings in the Omni thread!). Still up for the 26th, won't be there on the 19th.
