I would just buy them there. At the very worst all it will mean is that a bus will pull out while you are getting the tickets and you will have to wait for the next one.

If you are coming in from MXP, you can get off the Italian autostrada at Chiasso and cross the border into Switzerland, taking back roads into Lugano.

If I recall correctly, it is only about 20 kilometers from Chiasso to Lugano.

Okay, all that said -- if you are coming in from MXP and staying in downtown Lugano, I still suggest taking the bus. It is cheapest and easiest. You will have to grab a taxi to and from the Meet but that will present no problem at all.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the fine for being caught without a vignette on highways and "national roads" without a vignette is a hefty 400 CHF. This fine does include a vignette though... :D

I thought it was restricted to the Autostrada only -- am I wrong? What does a "national road" mean?

I thought so too, but unfortunately a lot of normal roads also require vignettes. "National road" means the national government in Bern (rather than the respective canton or local governments) paid for its construction and upkeep. This includes all highways, but it can also be a normal two lane road.

As far as I can tell, any road that is marked with a number is a national road and would thus be subject to the toll.

The best bet is to pay the 40 CHF to save the 400 CHF fine! ^ ^ Even if the fine comes with the vignette..... :D :D :D In other words you pay 40 CHF to save 360 CHF what I will call a pretty good return on your money!! :D :D

Only the freeways (Autobahn / autostrada) and the highspeed roads (Autostrasse / autostradale?) require the sticker. They are different from non toll roads in that they have green signs (vs. blue signs).

"National roads" was the old term used in Switzerland to for these "green" roads because they are built by the federal government.

Dovster, When are you leaving for the U.S.A.? Early December for your Florida meet? I'm leaving for BGO December 12th. Will not bring a laptop, but will check in on this tread periodically for any new updates. Hope your flight to Florida is a good one.

I'll be leaving Israel on Dec 4 and will be in the States until Dec 12. I won't have my laptop with me either, but I will be checking my e-mail and FlyerTalk at least once daily.

I certainly hope you can move it up to 30 Dec -- it would be a shame to land, turn around, and check in for your noon flight. :)
