Dovster - Fiancee and I spent a long weekend with family in Canobbio about 6 weeks ago. They did take us to Grotto Ticinese, a short drive from Canobbio. The address/phone is:
Via ai Grotti, 2 6944 Cureglia Tel: 091.967.12.26 The food was good (not great, but solid...I would eat there again and even recommend it); I had the mixed grill. The Chateau Briand for 2 was also good. In the summer, they are known for outdoor seating, though there is plenty of seating indoors. There is a similar place that was closed on the night we went out. It may be even better. I will check into it. Best, fduvall

"Grotto Ticinese" is a generic term unique to Ticino for restaurants which specialize in grilled meat. There is at least one restaurant with that actual name but it is not in Canobbio. I haven't checked back with my UIG because I am certain that she will not know the real name. This will have to wait until she gets to Lugano next time and can look in the phone book, call them, and ask about the actual name. Looking at the map, however, I am fairly certain that the name is "Ristorante Canvetto Federale". Either way, it is no problem. As long as we have less than 15 people, I am certain that we can get a reservation even as late as the day before the Meet. If we have more, I very much doubt that we will have a problem making a reservation on Dec 1. At the very worst, there is a charming restaurant/pub in the center of Canobbio we can use as a backup. Nobody except locals goes there and Canobbio is so small that it is never even close to full. |

If you were to walk along that street to its end, with Bar Billy being on your left, you would get to a large road which heads into Lugano proper. If you then turned left and headed towards Lugano the restaurant I have in mind would be on your right about 100 meters after you made the turn. Do you happen to know the name of that one? |
OK - The Cureglia restaurant, I am looking at my receipt, is called Grotto Ticinese.
Regarding the street in Canobbio, I think I recall Bar Billy, but not the restaurant you mention. I will ask my cousin and see if she knows. fduvall

The restaurant is also near the entrance to the village but outside of it and on a road perpendicular to Bar Billy's street. (I believe that Bar Billy's street is called via S. Bernardo.) |
Mmh... haven't seen this before. I'd definitely be interested. My family has a little cottage about 20km outside of Lugano, and I do speak the local dialect, so this could be good!

airoli, I have very happily added you to our list. Slowly but surely this is beginning to turn into a real Meet -- and now we even have someone who speaks ticinese!

Dovster, what approximate time of the afternoon/evening will the dinner be at? It might be way to early to say yet. I have found a web site from the official Turisim site for Lugano about bus connections between MXp and Lugano. What slack time would you need between arrival at MXP and getting to the Lugano bus at MXP? In case of arrival/weather delays 1-2 hours? It seems like you have to order the tickets ahead of time on the site, but it seems like 1 bus each runs from two places at MXP to Lugano every Hour? Is that correct? Have you taken one of those buses at times ? If for some reason you miss your bus hopefully you will be able to catch the next one? |
Dovster - I checked with cousin and he thinks the restaurant you are talking about is called Osteria de'l Pozzo. Supposed to be pretty good. They serve a 7 course meal with LOTS of wine in between courses. Nice for the FT crowd.
There is also another grotto-style grill called Popolare nearby in Breganzona, similar to Grotto Ticinise. fduvall

okflyer, it is definite that I will be in either Milan or Lugano that day, as will my UIG.
I would say that we should have a minimum of 6 people to have a Meet -- so as soon as 4 more people say they can be considered "definite" we will make this official and I will guarantee to be in Lugano. I think 7 in the evening would be a good time for the Meet to start, but depending on the weather, how many people we have coming, and my UIG's willingness to have a hoard of F/Ters descend on her house, we may agree to meet an hour earlier at her house. In fact, if enough are interested, we can also agree to meet the evening before for some drinks in Lugano proper. Generally, it takes me about 45 minutes after I get out of the airplane to get out of the terminal. I just looked at the Milano Airport site and it says you can buy the tickets on the spot. (I know that you can for Milan, so I would have been surprised if the same was not true for Lugano. You can call AIRPORTBUS GIOSY TOURS SA +39.0041 918582323 for confirmation. fduvall, I think your cousin is referring to a restaurant inside Canobbio which is very close to the village church. I know it has an excellent restaurant but is also known for costing mucho dinero. |
Okay, the restaurant's name puzzle has been solved.
My UIG gave me its telephone number + 41 91 941 2552. I looked up the phone number of the Ristorante Canvetto Federale on the internet and that is it. I think, however, that locally it is just called the "Grotto Canobbio". fduvall, would your cousin be willing to call them and ask how long in advance they would need reservations if our group gets to be around 15 people? |
My cousin did mention Canvetto Federale, but he thought it was known as Popolare. Anyway...with the telephone number, I will ask him to call with our question and get back to you asap.

I will book my flight when the meet is definite. I will also call the phone number above to check on paying the fare to Lugano when I get there. If all goes as scheduled my flight will be at MXP about 11.45 AM on Dec 30. I would definitely not be able to meet the night before. Any good reasonable places to shop either close to MXP or in Lugano? |

Are there 3 more people ready yet to say that they will definitely be there?
If so, okflyer can book his flight while the price is still low and I can start dividing up the list into "Definite" and "Possible". |
