Just returned from a DO of sorts and shared a room at the Hilton with another FTer. I don't see a problem with it, so long as you know each other a bit. But, then again, I'm young, so I probably have a different perspective than some others might.

We're a friendly bunch of FT'ers here in BNE - we've just racked up our 4th (Annual) FT meet at the BNE Qantas Club. In the time that I've been organising get-togethers (whether 2 or 30 people), we've mostly chosen neutral venues (like the QC or local pubs).

However, we've had an FT BBQ @ NM's house (an excellent venue), I've been to Dave Noble's pads in SYD and both of IainF's houses in BNE. ozmerish has dropped me back at my place (so he knows I'm not destitute)...and I'd now count a number of FT'ers good friends (including those mentioned).

Once Mrs QF WP and I move this year, we'll then be able to have a venue suitable for these kind of functions. I wouldn't have any problem in allowing FT'ers that I know to stay. But I'd be a little wary of FT'ers I didn't know.

hosted a FT'er(never met before) and been hosted by a FT'er(previously met) ,no problem whatsoever...might be that we are all very young and we don't mind.Plus shared a hotel room with another FT'er(never met but IM for months!) in LAX,unfortunately it wasn't a woman! ;-) but he was so generous that I got a SQ F pijama!

I travelled from Australia to England and spent 2 nights at a FTers place.
I had known this person for less an a year. I had been speaking to them on MSN, but had never spoken on the phone.

I spoke to someone online probably not FTer; and shared a hotel room with them and I had only known them for a week.

It was ok. I never met any of these people before I stayed with them.

Is that supposed to be a problem, seems like you people are so cautious.

I think the fear is based on the fact that we have many crazies in the US.

The primary risks are theft (including identity theft), rape, and murder, in that order.

The latter is exceedingly rare, and men are less vulnerable to sexual assault.

Most people don't take much of value to hotel rooms.

Those with young children at home might be more cautious than the single, who often "crash" (spend the night) at places as varied as beaches, campgrounds, youth hostels, vehicles, friends' and acquaintances' floors, et cetera. At least I did.

As someone who values thrift, allowing someone to bunk down on one's living room floor has something to recommend itself.

Had a Flyertalker stay at my house, actually, one year she spent christmas with us, two years later she came a few days after it, and spent new years at another FTers place... downside: we chitchatted all night like girls at summer camp and ate way too much good food

I also had the pleasure at staying at a FTers house and it was great again. Downside: we chatted until way too late and ate way too much good food.

And I crashed on the extra bed in a FTers hotel room after a DO one night.
There are times where Flyertalk feels more like a big extended family than a message board.
