12 Days of Christmas

The 12 Days of Christmas contest has officially ended ... and the member who was selected for Day 12, kristine169, did not claim the prize.

So what does that mean? Well, it is VERY good news for MilesToGoBeforeISleep

As a result of "playing the miles backward" MilesToGoBeforeISleep will be awarded the 12,000-mile Day 12 prize PLUS the 5,000-mile FT Chat bonus PLUS the 5,000-mile FT Wiki bonus PLUUUSSSS the 5,000-mile FT Review bonus ... for a total of 27,000 miles! (and that's in addition to the 38,000 miles MTGBIS won on Day 11 -- WOW).

But, as they say on TV, that's not all. MRLIMO is also the recepient of some extra holiday cheer, as he takes home the 5,000-mile FT Premium bonus.

Congratulations to all of the winners. We hope you enjoyed this little holiday contest, and we here at FlyerTalk would like to wish all of you the very best during this holiday season.

Final list of members whose names were drawn:
  • Day 1 -- bunkibutterfly (prize unclaimed)
  • Day 2 -- rolfepope (prize unclaimed)
  • Day 3 -- tj41 (Winner - 6,000 miles)
  • Day 4 -- tone004 (prize unclaimed)
  • Day 5 -- StarAllianceGold (prize unclaimed)
  • Day 6 -- Gee04 (prize unclaimed)
  • Day 7 -- MRLIMO (Winner - 27,000 miles)
  • Day 8 -- Gordy (prize unclaimed)
  • Day 9 -- gjriley (prize unclaimed)
  • Day 10 -- MeVoy (prize unclaimed)
  • Day 11 -- MilesToGoBeforeISleep (Winner - 65,000 miles)
  • Day 12 -- kristine169 (prize unclaimed)

HO-HO-HO!

Tis the season of giving, so we here at the House of Miles thought, 'What better way to kick off the season than by giving away nearly 100,000 bonus miles to FlyerTalkers?'

To spread the joy, we will be giving away a prize a day for 12 days -- hence the 12 Days of Christmas

There are, of course, an assortment of rules governing this contest and we will spell all of them out in good time. But before we get bogged down in all of that, here are the most important things you need to know:

- Beginning on Dec. 11 at 12 p.m. (noon) MT we will post the member name of the first potential winner right here at the top of this thread. This person will be eligible to win the Day 1 prize of 1,000 miles (the Day 2 prize will be 2,000 miles, Day 3, 3,000 miles, and so on).

- The person whose name is posted will have 24 hours to send a private message (PM) to the 12 Days member account (12 Days) to claim the prize. That's it, that's all you have to do. If you only remember one rule, this is the one to remember. You could forget all the rest, but if you know this one you could still win a big bunch of miles.

- If a prize goes unclaimed, it will "play forward" and be added to the next day's prize total (read some examples of what this means exactly in this milepost).

- If you decide you only want to remember two rules, add this one to your list -- you will have opportunities to win 5,000-mile bonus prizes along the way for completing designated activities. These activities need to be completed BEFORE YOU SEE YOUR NAME POSTED. Learn exactly what you have to do in this milepost.

So that's the contest in a nutshell. You can read a complete version of the rules in this milepost.

Again, the important thing to remember is that you need to check back to this thread every day during the contest to find out if your name has been posted.

Good luck and Happy Holidays.

12 Days of Christmas Contest Rules

Here's how the 12 Days of Christmas contest is going to work:

On Dec. 11 at 12 p.m. (noon) MT we will post the member name of the first potential daily winner right here at the top of this thread. That person will then have exactly 24 hours to send a private message (PM) to the 12 Days user account to claim their 1,000-mile Day 1 prize. If he or she fails to claim the prize within 24 hours the miles will "play forward" and will be added to the next day's prize total. So, the FlyerTalker whose member name is posted on Dec. 12 at 12 p.m. could have the opportunity to win 3,000 miles (1,000-mile Day 1 prize + 2,000-mile Day 2 prize), and so on, and so on.

And these aren't just any miles, they are magic holiday miles. They can be added into any account you wish -- if you wish hard enough (all right, this is starting to sound more like a Peter Pan promotion than a holiday promotion, but you get the idea). Just tell us the program you want to add them into and we will figure out a way to get them there (that's sort of our specialty ).

Because you are all expert mileage mathematicians, you are no doubt wondering, 'Why did they say they are giving away nearly 100,000 bonus miles when the daily mileage prizes only add up to 78,000 miles?'

Good, um, wonderment

On four days of the contest -- days 3, 6, 9 and 12 -- a 5,000-mile bonus prize will be offered. But to be eligible to receive the bonus prizes you have to EAT 12 HARD BOILED EGGS IN UNDER TWO MINUTES! ... Oops, sorry, wrong task -- that was from another contest we were considering, FT Fear Factor, which was mercifully voted down in a recent meeting.

No, actually all you have to do is complete some simple FlyerTalk tasks, as follows:

To be eligible for the Day 3 bonus, you must be a FlyerTalk Premium member (Don't worry, this is the only one of the bonus tasks that has an associated cost). Your Premium membership could be three months old or three days old it doesnt matter just as long as your Premium membership is activated prior to your name appearing in this thread. You can go here to sign up for FlyerTalk Premium access. See this milepost for more information about FlyerTalk Premium.

To be eligible for the Day 6 bonus, you must have participated in the FlyerTalk Chat room sometime between Dec. 8 and the time your name was posted in this thread. By participate, we mean you have to log in to the chat (which you can do from this page) and type something anything. It could be as simple as typing the word Hello or as involved as joining a discussion about the pros and cons of the Star Alliance. Our hope, of course, is that those of you who have yet to discover this handy feature of FlyerTalk will come to learn why so many other members spend their evenings shooting the breeze with fellow road warriors. Also, youll want to keep your eye on the FlyerTalk chat room long after this contest is over, as from time to time we host guest speakers from various programs up there and many have been known to give away EVEN MORE than 100,000 miles to chat guests.

(Heres an interesting factoid to break up the monotony of reading through these rules: Though the FlyerTalk chat sees a good amount of activity most evenings, it received its highest usage to date immediately following the events of 9/11, as FlyerTalkers from around the world used the room to check in on their fellow members. And when did the chat room notch its second highest period of activity? When we switched to the upgraded vBulletin bulletin board and had to take the forums down for a couple of days to get everything set up.)

To be eligible for the Day 9 bonus, you must edit or add information to the FlyerTalk Wiki (see this milepost to find out what the heck the FlyerTalk Wiki is and why you should care) sometime between Dec. 8 and the time your name was posted to this thread. If you are new to Wikis, editing a page that already exists is simpler than creating an entirely new page. And, if you are REALLY new to Wikis, this page is setup specifically to practice on and edits to this page WILL count for the bonus. There are also a couple of important stipulations to this bonus:

1. Your Wiki edit/addition must be made under your FT username. For assorted technical reasons that we won't get into here the FT Forum username database and the Wiki username database are not linked, which means you will need to register your FT username in the Wiki system (you can register here).
2. If you discover that your FT username has already been registered by someone else in the FlyerTalk Wiki, you must register a different username and send a private message to 12 Days telling us what your Wiki username is prior to your name being posted in this thread. You only need to send us a private message IF you are unable to register your FlyerTalk username in the Wiki system.
3. When claiming your prize, you must also include a link to the edit/addition you made to the Wiki.

To be eligible for the Day 12 bonus, you must post a review to the FlyerTalk Reviews database sometime between Dec. 8 and the time your name was posted to this thread. Tell us about your favorite restaurant, review the hotel you just stayed at (or are currently staying at), or join the hundreds who just saw King Kong at the theater and cant wait to vent/rave about it. What you review is up to you, but remember, please make it a worthwhile read for other members. When claiming your prize, you must also include a link to the review you entered.

And there's more exciting news. If a daily winner isn't eligible for the bonus prize, it will play forward completely independent of the daily prize. For example, if the Day 3 winner claims the daily prize but is not a FlyerTalk Premium member, the Day 3 bonus will remain unclaimed and upcoming winners will still have a shot at it.

That should be everything ... oh, except for one other thing -- What happens if no one claims the prize on Day 12?

If the Day 12 mileage prize is unclaimed it will be awarded to the latest winner and any unclaimed bonus prizes will be awarded to the latest eligible winner(s).

For example, if there were a Day 11 winner he/she would be awarded the 12,000-mile Day 12 prize. If the Day 11 winner entered a Review into the system, he/she would also win the Reviews bonus prize. However, if the Day 11 winner had not written a review and the Day 10 winner had, the Day 10 winner would be awarded the Reviews bonus (the Day 11 winner would still receive the 12,000-mile award). If none of the winners had posted a review to the system during the contest, the Reviews bonus would go unclaimed. The same logic applies to any other unclaimed bonus prizes. In this situation, prizes will be awarded automatically and members will not be required to send a private message claim.

That's a lot to take in, but don't worry, we'll keep everyone up to date as the contest rolls along.

How does this whole "play forward" thing work?

It's pretty simple really.

Let's say, for example, that on Day 4 we post the name Randy Petersen at the top of this page. Randy then has 24 hours to send a private message (PM) to the 12 Days member account claiming his prize. Well, 24 hours comes and goes and there's no PM from Randy claiming his prize (sure, it seems odd, as Randy is ALWAYS up on FT, but were sure he has his reasons).

Then, on Day 5, the username Janet at WebFlyer is posted. Janet sends in a PM and collects her 5,000-mile Day 5 prize AND the unclaimed 4,000-mile Day 4 prize, for a total of 9,000 miles (and shortly thereafter, it is discovered that Randy was briefly kidnapped by a group that can in no way be traced to Janet. Thankfully, he is released unharmed ).

This playing forward of unclaimed prizes could occur over the course of several days. For example, if the Day 2 and Day 3 prizes had also gone unclaimed in the scenario above, Janet would walk away with a total of 14,000 miles -- and that's not including the Day 3, 5,000-mile bonus prize she would also earn if she were a FlyerTalk Premium member (as it would have been unclaimed on Days 3 and 4).

Quick and extremely relevant fact: There are over 85,000 registered FlyerTalkers, many of whom are not active on a daily basis.

What is the FlyerTalk Wiki and why should I care?

If you aren't familiar with the concept of a wiki, it is essentially a type of Web application that allows for collaborative writing. With a wiki, you, the user, can easily write web pages, edit pages others have written, delete information, change the organization of information ... and so on and so on.

In developing the FlyerTalk Wiki, we have created a space where FlyerTalkers, as well as non-FlyerTalkers, can maintain a store of information about all things frequent travel, and the information can be updated by anyone who comes along and sees something that is out of date or what have you. If all goes well, the FlyerTalk Wiki will eventually become a resource where anyone can find information on a vast range of travel topics.

We could try to explain the concept in more detail, but you are certain to have more fun learning through play than reading what we have to say. So when you get a chance, head on over to http://www.flyertalk.com/wiki and dive right in. And when you do, keep these thoughts in mind:

Even though you can make changes to the content, you can't cause any real damage -- In the FlyerTalk Wiki, every version of a page is saved, so if erroneous information is entered, the page can always be reverted back to a previous version by any user. The moral: Don't be hesitant to jump in and start editing/creating.

If you aren't sure where to start, try editing a page that already exists -- The wiki allows you to create pages, but until you get the hang of it you might want to try editing some of the pages that are already up there. One page in particular, called the Sandbox, is designed specifically as a place to practice (hint, edits to the Sandbox WILL count for the bonus prize).

The wiki should serve as a nice complement to the forums in that it provides an area where members can maintain information on the various programs (and anything travel related, for that matter) and create a constantly growing and continually updated knowledge base of information that is of interest to frequent travelers.

At this point, even we don't know what the FlyerTalk Wiki will eventually look like, but what we do know is that if you all participate in its development the result is sure to be something special.
