ex-ord fares vs. fare war cities

Regarding ORD-SJU: I'm no newbie, so I understand that UA is warring with DL and others ex-SLC, ATL, etc for cheap fares to SJU. But being that SLC, ATL, IAH all route through ORD anyways for SJU, it's still annoying to see the ex-ORD nonstop* all by itself being almost double the fares from the fare war cities. Sure would like to ticket SLC-ORD-SJU and be able to skip SLC-ORD and magically pick it up in ORD (wishful thinking I know).

I can always get to ORD through a variety of cheap/late booked means, than I can get to the other fare war cities. I get to DEN frequently enough for work that I'd be tempted to book the SLC trip anyways and then figure out later how to get there from DEN.

But I continue to check every so often ex-ORD and ex-OMA for the DO dates. Mrs. omahajim and I will enjoy a short trip to SJU in August, maybe some reconnaissance for September.

* is it against FT protocol to not always be looking for the most circuitous route from A to B? :p We were just looking for a quick cheap vacation for Sept., not necessarily for the miles. Oh, the horror

Same thing happends to me all the time. I travel often from FLL and MIA to SJU and it seems always to be much higher than places farther away like ORD and NYC.

I will keep everyone posted if some other fare pop-up that are worth taking a look.

Will see you in September, Puerto Rico DO.

Aviationkiwi... I suppose the best thing for me to do would be to book 15,000 reduced award DEN-SLC then ticket paid SLC-ORD-SJU. The award draws the balance down I want for later, but can get about half of it back with the RDMs to SJU (plus the EQMs would be handy since I want to make my way back to 1P if possible). Best solution I have right now.

Thanks
Jim

I will add you as tentative. Let me know when you have a definite decision. :)

ak... might have to scratch that. POOF... all the xxx>SJU cities (SLC, etc) have apparently disappeared. What I was finding on ITA just an hour ago from all these cities, has jumped many hundreds of dollars. Unless 1) I'm doing something wrong, or 2) someone at UA snapped out of it.

Thanks
Jim
