Thanks, Cholula! Hopefully, our DL flight from JFK to VCE will be in well ahead of that time.

from the Tampa Crown Room - the next wave is underway!

Well, I'm off. The gray funk outside (aka gloom and fog) was sad so I decided to pack my stuff and take the long (and $40 cheaper) way to the airport - the train... leaving at 12:30, meeting Platbrowngal at 2:15 and then off to start my own odyssey at 4:15.

Barring any impedement by the funk in Dallas, the rain in London, and this strike nonsense which hopefully won't affect either an 11:00 or 16:45 arrival, I will see you all in Venice tomorrow afternoon :).

Oh this is very common; the norm even. In fact, wildcat strikes ('sciopero selvaggio') are relatively uncommon and frowned upon - I remember there was one last year for the Milanese transit company and a lot of grief was given to the union leaders. Quite often the strikes are on Friday or Monday in order to lengthen the weekend appropriately. Also common is for a half-day strike to be planned for the first half of Friday, thereby obviating the need to turn up in the afternoon either.

Talking of strikes, anyone who is hanging around for a while after the meet might like to know that 30th November is projected to be a general strike in Italy - even the more moderate unions are expected to be taking part.

I found ten quid in my rollaboard! ^

(That's almost twenty bucks :))... yes, completely off topic, but still made my day so far. And made me decide to go get lunch and take a cab after all. The fog is breaking, too ^.

The strikes in Europe really are odd... everyone knows about them, they have a set start and end time, and regardless of whether or not their situation is resolved they still go back to work. "Strike" or "massive agreement to cut work"?

The pubs must love strike days.

Canarsie Nov 18, 2004 1:29 pm

Will anyone be there at the airport in Venice if and when I arrive there?

A strike in Italy is not a manoeuvre intended to force the other party to the bargaining table. It is merely a way to express dissatisfaction in a concrete manner. I believe the strike planned for the 30th is to express displeasure with a new law concerning pension benefits and retirement age.

Leaving from my current client's site last week, I was given a leaflet by a representative of the Italian Communist Party on this very topic.

Thanks for the strike info, Cholula!

Called Alitalia, my flight NCE-FCO is leaving on time at 11:10 but the connecting flight at 13:15 (AZ 1471. I think) has been cancelled. Now I will have a 5 hour layover in Rome, and then get on flight AZ 1475 FCO-VCE at 17:30, arriving at 18:30.

I will check Cholula's and Carnasie's flights upon arrival and try to look for them everywhere possible in the vicinity while dragging my two large suitcases. :o

(kicking self really hard for not taking the train instead)

Thanks, Dov!

We will be waiting at the Lobby at 12:00 (if everything goes right with our flight arriving at 10:20), hoping that this place will not be the end of the walking tour but rather the beginning... :)

If we miss, we will be at the bar at 7:30 or the restaurant at 8:00.

Let's do this: We will plan on stopping at your hotel around 12 noon. I don't know right now if that will be towards the beginning of the walking tour, in the middle, or near the end.

Is that okay with you?

Dovster Nov 19, 2004 3:40 am

Ralf, there is also a boat tour leaving the Ai Mori at either 10 or 11 am (sorry, I can not remember which). You can PM Obscure2K for details.

I prefer going around by foot, so if you are not going on the boat, I will come to your hotel at 12.

platbrownguy Nov 19, 2004 6:10 am

By gosh, we done did it!

Despite numerous announcements about the possibility of the strike cancelling our flight, we took off and landed at 11ish without incident.

After a full night of travel, and given the fact that we had absolutely no idea whether or not anyone would be there to share a taxi with us even if we did wait 3 hours, we just took the bus (€3) and vaporetto (€7). It's about a 10-minute walk from the Guglie vaporetto station.

Tomorrow when we go get Platbrowndude we'll probably take the water taxi back.

I have a local cell phone number - its (+39) 333-163-9267.

The Ai Mori is a nice little hotel with great staff (I'm in the business center now)... if anyone else is here already and wants to go for coffee call my cell or I'm in room 105.

ralfkrippner Nov 19, 2004 6:58 am

O.K., I'm offline now.

We wouldn't make it for the boat tour at 10 or 11 but barely to the hotel at 12. So if you would stop there at 12 we are in the lobby awaiting you. I will have a flyertalk baggage tag attached to my foto-bag.

If we don't meet we will see us at the bar or the restaurant in the evening.

Looking forward to meet you all,
Ralf

Just to bring back this important post to others that would have to search for a while till they find it... ;)

Owner charging 35Euro PP for 5 course meal, and this will also include mineral water, Prosecco wine, coffee and dessert. He is giving us the restaurant for the entire evening. We will have the entire restaurant just for the FTrs. This is a phenomenal deal and I am certain that everyone will be very pleased (even Dov & Punki). The name of the restaurant is Osteria Bea Vita. I suggest that those FTrs not staying at AI Mori meet at Ai Mori at 7:30 in the bar and we can all walk over there together. Reservation is 8:00 PM, dress is quite casual. I feel very good about this place and the decision to cancel Vini da Gigio. If you recall, Vini da Gigio was charging 52Euros pp and did not include water, prosecco or coffee. IMHO, the food at Bea Vita is as good as Vino Da Gigio.

Have a grand time everyone. Sorry, I can't be there.

Dovster Nov 20, 2004 6:38 am

Ralf, a group of us were at your hotel at 12 but were told you would not show up until 4. I left a message for you to come to the Ai Mori at 7 tonight.

I look forward to meeting you.

Venice Meet Update

Just posting an update on happenings thus far. Most everybody has shown up and is accounted for. Haven’t seen ralfkrippner and a couple others but I’m sure the whole gang will be present at the dinner tonight.
Several folks...myself and Canarsie included...encountered substantial delays in arriving yesterday due to the Italian air controllers strike. And a few bags were delayed a day or so but everything is now back to normal.
Many of us took a walking tour or a canal tour of Venice today and enjoyed the unique sights in this famous and historic city. And the weather...although cool...was bright and sunny.
Further updates will be forthcoming as the Meet progresses. We miss those of you who couldn’t make this trip but we are already formulating plans for the next DO...:).
