SIN RUN 2004 Do

SIN RUN 2004 sees FTers taking off from Newark, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Chicago and a variety of other locales to rendezvous in Singapore for a munch on the famous Chili Crabs, Pepper Crabs, and other assorted SE Asian delicacies to be had.

We fly in and out on a variety of days and airlines, but the main event is dinner on Saturday, January 17, 2004.

Last year many of us met up at the Conrad for pre-dinner drinks and then shared a van (same fare per person as a taxi) to and back from the restaurant. Same again this year I am sure. Some go directly from other hotels, shopping, or sightseeing expeditions and meet at the restaurant directly.

Later that night there is also a chance for a midnight snack at a local food court for late arrivals or for those who just need more of the good eats available.

There is a webpage set up for this event and it can be seen here:

SIN RUN 2004 Webpage

Post here if you will join, or if you just have questions or comments.

Kick off the year with a big mileage boost and join us in SIN!

SanDiego1K Oct 13, 2003 9:07 pm

I'm in.

I'll offer a UA 15% off cert (Friends and Family, good thru May 15, 2004), to the first who can find a SAN-SIN fare sub $700 on UA that doesn't require a 6 day minimum stay. I just did a quick and dirty fare check, and came up with $1093. I believe that it was November last year before UA came out with better fares.

dhammer53 Oct 13, 2003 9:28 pm

Mike,

I was just pricing out this itn. Prices from New York are still on the high side.
I'm PSP bound unless 'keithguy' or someone else can figure out a way to bring down the cost. Departure from JFK, with a 24 hour stop at LAX.

I certainly would love to attend the 2nd annual SIN run party. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Sean, Kenji, Ron, SweetWillie???

Note to SanDiego1K, better watch out for that guy in 16A. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

A strong maybe. Haven't eaten at Jumbo yet (I love Lucky View's black pepper crabs in the same complex). Definitely a tempting proposition...

PETEFLYS Oct 13, 2003 11:02 pm

You can count me in as soon as the fares drop.
I have 2 sweet spots waitng for this trip.

SkiAdcock Oct 13, 2003 11:20 pm

I will be a SIN person from afar, as I'll be in New Zealand (using the dolphin cert mjm gifted me) on a 10-day trip. Cheers all, and have a fab time!

Alright guys and gal. Your names are all displayed on the page by status (i.e. confirmed or waitlisted)

I think we are going to get a fair few new names in November if fares drop then as predicted.

Keep us posted on your travel status and the page shall be updated accordingly.

This trip is perfect for both Sweet Spots and SWUs as it is early enough in the year.

See you there. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I was interested in the HKG Housewarming event posted by GK, but when I looked at the dates, I thought to myself that Chinese New Year usually falls around this date. After checking the date the event falls a few weeks after Chinese New Year. Well just a heads up to anyone that plans to go to SIN that Chinese New Year is on January 22, 2004 so this might affect the price of tickets to the area http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

stick us down as maybes.. i'll check out the fares nearer the time. not so far from HK after all !

GK Oct 14, 2003 2:38 am

oh dear. just spoke to my new boss, looks like i may be working that weekend. will know more nearer the time.

mjm Oct 14, 2003 2:42 am

Excellent.

The gentlemen from, or soon to be anyway, Hong Kong are now on the list. Definitely hope you can make it with it being just a hop away.

**Edited to add, if you do end up working, send your proxy anyway and we will send a take away home with him.

Mike, count me in! I've already been upgraded on CO/NW & have reserved the Sheraton, Ritz Millenium & Hyatt for my 3 nights. Nice way for me to start off my miles & stays for the year + getting my fill of chilli / pepper crabs http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif--not to mention meeting up with old & new FT friends.

bummer bummmer bummer, I have training for the company I just got hired with that following week, 7am sharp on that Monday.

For now I'm a no, but if I feel comfortable w/my responsibilities by that time, I may shoot out early this time instead of the 6 hour turnaround.

ws8n Oct 14, 2003 9:15 am

I should be able to make it...

bseller, is BKK in Jan or Feb? I'm confused
FWIW folks, we just had chilli crab at Jumbo last weekend.

auh2o Oct 14, 2003 10:21 am

Well, considering the 49ers nor the Raiders will be in the playoffs.... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

Just need the fares to drop a bunch...

techgirl Oct 14, 2003 10:33 am

Sounds very tempting... but will depend a great deal on how construction is progressing on my house.

(After all, Mike... we have to have a place in Coppell where you can go escape while visiting the family!) http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

alanw Oct 14, 2003 10:53 am

mjm,

I would really like to do this! I was planning to go over Christmas but not gonna happen so this would be perfect.

Any chance of organizing a daytrip to JB for a little DVD-and-software shopping?

I think I owe you one more mug so (with the shopping) there's three reasons to make the trip.

I wonder if it costs a fortune from BCN?

Wilson - BKK is President's Day in Feb (14,15,16) and HKG is ML King Day in Jan (17,18,19).

Great to see you!! Really, really sorry I'm going to miss out on the second annual SIN run DO!!

Best wishes, Dave

chemist661 Oct 14, 2003 3:42 pm

If UA doesn't have the 6 day min stay requirement, I'll fly to SIN & attend. Hope to use sweet spots for these.

mjm Oct 14, 2003 6:42 pm

Ok, I have you all noted on the SIN RUN 2004 Do website. Looking forward to another great group.

mauld, you are the guest of honor for having initiated this little gathering in the first place. I am just playing secretary and logistics coordinator. : )

Sweet Willie, we shall hold out a good thought for your attendance, but hey, having a job is not the worst thing that could happen to a person. We can do this again (maybe even before Jan. '05) if you miss this round.

ws8n, Cool, see you aboard again?

auh2o, ain't that the truth. Pepper crabs are good therapy though for crushed dreams of going the big dance.

alanw, Fantastic! Hope you do come. A day trip to JB is certainly a possibility. I think I recall a few threads on this in either this forum or in Mileage Run. I have not done JB myself so will see if I can dig up that info for you. Anybody else recall the specifics on JB as a day trip?

chemist661, I think when fares drop there is going to be a mad rush by a few FTers for the best seats in C. Hope to see you there.

techgirl, sounds like you are pretty busy and I look forward to seeing the finished product. It is certain to spectacular! Shall I go ahead and add you to the maybe list on the webpage or do you want to wait until closer to the end of the year to make that call?

As for Chinese New Year being a possible spoiler for fares, I am not overly worried. Most fares from SIN to China, Hong Kong, and many of the countries to which residents of SIN return during the holiday are very high. Usually getting to SIN is quite reasonable. Plus we are a few days ahead of the curve doing this the previous weekend. Fares from NRT to SIN are cheap now and that is usually a good indicator. Keep your fingers crossed everybody and see you in SIN soon.

B747-437B posted the following last summer:

Malaysia

To get to Malaysia, the cheapest and easiest option is to take the MRT to Kranji station and then catch SBS public bus number 170 towards Johor Bahru. The bus runs every 5-10 minutes and costs S$0.80 in addition to the MRT fare to Kranji (about S$1-2 depending where you start from).

At the Woodlands checkpoint, you alight from the bus and clear outbound immigration (the lines are very short for "Foreign" passport holders since most Malaysian commuters use a special automated card system). Then you reboard the bus and ride across the causeway before alighting again on the Malaysian side. Here again, there are separate lines for Malaysians, Singaporeans and "Others" so there is no queue worth speaking of. In my case, I spent less than 10 seconds at the Singapore side and about 1 minute on the Malaysia side. The delay on the Malaysia side was only because the officer was making sure I had no Israel stamps in my well-used passport.

You can then reboard the 170 bus and travel to either the KMT railway station (first stop) or the Larkin Bus Station (second stop). If your destination is Johor Bahru, I reccomend the railway station stop as it is right adjacent to the giganctic City Square mall where you can get some excellent deals on shopping. You can board the 170 bus at the same stops on the way back, or take the Malaysian "CausewayLink" service. There is also the "Singapore-Johore Express" bus service that runs nonstop from downtown Singapore to Larkin terminus.

On the way back, I was stopped by Singapore customs who wanted to check if I had bought any pirated CDs/DVDs but the entire thing took less than 5 minutes once they established I was clean. There was a horrible traffic jam on the causeway though, but actual immigration formalities took less than a minute each.

SanDiego1K Oct 15, 2003 9:46 pm

United has released fares that do not require 6 day stays. It is pricing out at just under $700 from San Diego or Carlsbad before I use my 15% off cert. The fare basis code is VXSP32, which is upgradeable with Sweet Spots.

MIN STAY - RETURN FIRST SUNDAY AFTER
DEPARTURE OUTBOUND TRANSPACIFIC SECTOR

Fare expert Darren spotted this fare on a brief break from his law studies.

kluau88 Oct 16, 2003 1:13 am

The same V fares are available ex-SFO. Prices out to 679.08 w/o any discounts. That's for a Thursday deptarture and Monday return.

SanDiego1K Oct 17, 2003 7:47 pm

My ticket is purchased, and flight info sent to mjm for the website. I arrive near midnight on Friday, and leave at the crack of dawn on Monday. I'm upgraded on 3 of 4 segments - not a bad starting position.

mjm Oct 17, 2003 10:26 pm

My itinerary is now set too. Looks like we may need to grab that conference room at the RCC again. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Details now added to the webpage for:

Anyway, greetings from Auckland, NZ. Will be here for at least a week.

mjm Oct 19, 2003 4:23 am

kokonutz,

Cool. You are now on the waitlist on the webpage. Let us know when your status changes and I will update the page. The cheap V fares (for use with SWU and Sweet Spots) are out now from various points but upgrade availability on the way back for the SIN-NRT leg may be challenging. Good luck.

ws8n,

You are now officially upgraded to confirmed on the webpage. Drop a note with flight details when you have them and I shall add those also.

Just a brief side note regarding the entry procedures to Malaysia: they don't care if you have Israeli stamps in your passport. My previous passport had over a dozen of them, I've been in Malaysia more times than I can count, and Immigration never even batted an eye.

violist Oct 21, 2003 9:18 am

Violist, who has just gotten over the shock
of realizing that he needs 3 (three) one-day
mileage runs at the end of this year, is going
to avoid that necessity for '04 and will be there.
The aroma of chilli crab in his mind's nose
has absolutely nothing to do with it. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif
The lure of sharing a meal with SD1K again
(not to mention other friends new or old)
has absolutely nothing to do with it. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif
Unfortunately, he's had his sweet spots
spoken for (having a girlfriend accompanying
him frequently these days does tend to eat
up those certs), so he will be sitting 22884
miles in coach - but don't cry for him, because
he has exit and/or bulkhead on all segments.

See you all at the RCC if not before!

Cheers,
Michael
who, with work being slow in the first couple
months of the year, has booked 49594 miles in
the first 6 weeks of 2004 and who doubted the
guy whom he sat next to a couple weeks ago when
he said he flew a million miles a year, but,
you know what, it really does seem possible.

Fantastic to have you aboard. The website is now current with your info as well. See you in SIN and look forwad to reading the review http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Note to all SIN RUN '04 attendees:

I have amended the pre-dinner meeting details on the website today. Currently we are planning on meeting for drinks at the Conrad Hilton Club Lounge prior to grabbing a shared taxi/van to the restaurant and this shall be confirmed closer to the time with details posted on the website and in this thread on FT.

Just bought my SIN ticket using a 15% off cert. To get the dates I wanted, I booked going to/from ONT instead of LAX. Since I have relatives that live close to ONT, no worries. (and an extra 1K status miles to boot!). My itinerary on UA is as follows:

UA 6347 ONT-LAX 0935A 1005A 1/15 4B
UA 891 LAX-NRT 1115A 0355P 1/15 15A
UA 801 NRT-SIN 0530P 1155P 1/16 Waitlist
UA 800 SIN-NRT 0720A 0250P 1/19 13B
UA 890 NRT-LAX 0425P 0855A 1/19 15A
UA 6348 LAX-ONT 1045A 1119A 1/19 4B

Priced at $617.43 after 15% discount. ($711.43 before discount). What was interesting was I couldn't get the 1/15/04 outbound from LAX but from ONT going through LAX it was available. All jet sectors upgraded except NRT-SIN.

Put me down as confirmed & am looking forward to meeting everyone in SIN. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
