In my day job, I'm CFO for two public policy think tanks. But I also do fundraising consulting as side projects, primarily political direct marketing. Among others, I've written under the signatures of the two most recent majority leaders in congress. I've also handled both fundraising and logistics for large, high profile events.

I founded my Southern California-based private corrections company in 1988, and have about 70 employees. I may be the only one who hopes NOT to get any biz out of this thread. While I primarily run halfway houses contracted by the Federal Bureau of Prisons and California Department of Corrections, I also offer private work furlough, electronic house arrest, continuous remote alcohol monitoring, and private probation reports. Trust me; it’s better to just not get arrested.

Sorry, everyone, I am not as computer literate as I thought. Double posted to Hire a FlyerTalker, no post to Business Exchange. Hopefully this falls in the right forum. Give me your thoughts, PLEASE!!!

I am not sure The FlyerTalk Business Exchange Forum has assisted anyone or will help anyone, but even if it helps one other FlyerTalker, it was well worth it.

Good luck to you, greatam!

Thanks for the suggestion, Carnarsie. I am reposting and looking for feedback, and of course, clients.

I am not a travel agent, nor do I really want to be. What I am is COO of a logistics management company, who is getting ready to retire at 55 and wants to keep a hand in the logistics business. I am also a world traveler, both for business and leisure. I would never THINK of booking something without checking it out thoroughly myself. That being said, I have a wealth of knowledge getting people and product to a lot of different places without problems.

My idea is to help people arrange trips to places (especially shore excursions and pre and post cruise excursions) which are fun, educational, and a lot of bang for the buck. I would charge a flat fee for planning an itinerary and really steering people to places and events which have value. Clients would book their own hotels, etc. from my recommendations. I would make my money for PLANNING. The client could book the least expensive rooms, fares, etc. as I would not be making any money off the commodities. I would also be there to solve problems, even if it was the client's fault. Kind of like a travel agent, but more a logistics planner.

Just got a friend a great trip to Machu Picchu pre cruise and he is still raving about how little it cost. $868.34pp for 3 nights hotel, including one night at the Sanctuary in MP, rt air from Lima, MP entrance fees, train to MP, Pizac market and trip to Sacred Valley, and all the misc., except food and shopping. NCL was charging $1695pp for 3 days, no Sanctuary at MP (and no sunrise or sunset over MP) and 3 DAYS OFF THE SHIP. He booked everything himself, just let me plan the whole thing and I charged him $100.00. I had a ball doing the planning and he had a very good vacation.

Does this sound like a viable alternative to a travel agent? I believe in GREAT customer service. How do I get the word out that I would like to do this?

Thanks for any help you can give me

Gina

Very Interesting thread.

After 10 years of experience in international banking (worked/lived in 6 countries during my ex-life as a banker), I dediced to go independent last year. Ive started a Trading Company focusing on foodstuffs and related products. We are mostly dealing with exporting Argentine products to the SE Asia region, an area not traditionally covered by local companies. Current focus is on industrial food production ingredients, including additives, flavourings and related products. We are now expanding into other areas including oils, fats and meats. Wine is one area we are also working on, and I expect have a few boutique wineries that have some limited release material that may be available to qualified buyers in selected markets.

Another related proyect is an Escargot farm, which we are developing in Buenos Aires province (some 100kms from EZE). We are looking to produce premium quality farm Escargots to provide the European markets.

I should have our websites ready for public view later this year, Im a little old-school style in that I refuse to publish a website until the real bricks & mortar operation has something serious and with tangible depth to show. We are now in the hiring process for our trading operations (with offices in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Jakarta, Indonesia) and will go live on our website soon.

As of yesterday, I have been introduced as a partner in a new venture as a manufacturer's representative (or broker). A co-worker was let go on 12/31, and she immediately started her own brokerage. Since I have been very successful in the past in bringing her business to sell, she asked me to join her. I'm still working full-time for my current employer until some funds roll in. We sell to Sam's, Costco, Wal-Mart, JC Penney's, Neiman-Marcus, etc.

The import arm of a leading Mexican food producer gave her all his current US business, and I have been asked to develop other retailers (my first project is Gigante USA, a Mexican retailer building a US presence).

All I can say is !

Doesn't anyone around here make anything except trouble? I guess Gaucho gets some credit for "making" snails--although the snails are doing all the work. That must be fun to watch!

I'm in the vertical transportation business. Elevators, not airlines. My company makes and installs elevator cabs (the architectural box you ride in) and entrances (the doors and frames you walk through between the hallway to the elevator cab). We do this smack in the middle of New York City. Obviously, this makes us a bunch of dinosaurs. We're older than AA, higher quality than CX and bigger than PA and TW put together.

If you own, manage or are in the process of building a large building, preferably within 6 hours flying time from NY, drop me a line.

Probably not, the money left manufacturing quite awhile ago. Now most everybody is into distribution. Or maybe I should say a lot of the manufacturing left the country. I have been told that Wal-mart is the largest corporation in the world, and they don't manufacture anything, they just distribute items manufactured by other companies. Somebody has to manufacture since there is no shortage of product available, but I guess most FTers don't.
