SYD 1/24-1/28

I'm going to be in SYD 1/24-1/28 for a "business trip". I won't have any way to get around, but if anyone feels like dropping by the Four Seasons for a drink, let me know. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

corbetti Jan 8, 2003 2:05 pm

I'll be there from Jan 27-Feb 6, so count me in! I'm staying at the Four Points on Darling Harbor. There are lots of great places around the CBD that we could meet up at. Anyone else?

kawoh Jan 8, 2003 2:33 pm

Looks like i'll unfortunately miss both of you. I'll be away from the 23 Jan. But i'm sure some of the other FT'ers in SYD will be able to set something up! Enjoy this beautiful city.

tinkybelle Jan 8, 2003 3:05 pm

I'll be around.
Would love to catch up.
Anyone else?

Business trip/Four Seasons?! Sounds like a major boondoggle to me! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

And in Sydney - your feet as well as buses and ferrys will get you around just fine.

pitflyer Jan 8, 2003 3:13 pm

I'll be in Sydney from Jan 31 - February 6. First time in Australia, would love to enjoy a good meal somewhere (currency exchange rate makes this possible for even cheap people like me!)

I'm staying at the Westin.

Hey... we have a one hour meeting scheduled on Sunday morning. Hence, a business trip. At least that's what our friends at the IRS say! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

As for those in town, Liz is right -- I can in fact get to random places. If someone "in the know" can recommend a good spot for a drink (I guess I should own up to the shameful fact that I don't drink beer, but I'll drink most other inebriants), the only times I'm not free for sure are Sunday morning, Monday, and whenever the Super Bowl is actually on. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif (Speaking of which, can someone tip me off to how likely and when I'll be able to view the Super Bowl out there?)

ozstamps Jan 9, 2003 3:48 am

You guys know I suppose that Sunday January 26th is Australia Day. (i.e. basically your 4th July/Thanksgiving -take your pick!) There will be 1000s of things going on that day and the city will be gridlock. Regattas, Air displays, Tall Ships races, Jazz, Music, Parades, etc. Summer here, so warm and sunny of course:

www.australiaday.com.au/sydney_harbour.html

The Public Holiday will be Monday 27th in NSW. So lots of things will be closed then - keep that in mind for your day to day planning.

ALSO keep in mind that there will be a BIG fireworks display in Darling Harbour on Sunday at 9pm you should NOT miss. Corbetti shopud fly in a day earlier as his Hotel looks right at it! There is a massive 9pm fireworks on NYE, followed by the world's most spectacular one each year at midnight centred about the Bridge. HOWEVER, this year it was windy at 9pm so they cancelled it and held them all over for Australia Day so will be the biggest ever. THESE will be fired from Bridge too it looks like:

www.sydneynewyearseve.com.au/austday_fireworks.htm

And expect this type of stunning deal so DO pack a camera:

http://www.homesonnet.com.au/panoramas/gallery17.htm

I am booked to fly down to and from MEL on Tuesday 28th to have lunch with Rudi and Gisela, so Tues 28th is out for me.

What time Mon 27th does Corbetti arrive ..... as he may have somehing I need to pass on to him anyway?

Can I suggest we try and arrange something on Monday 27th after Corbetti is settled in?

corbetti Jan 9, 2003 5:36 pm

Hi All,

i'm trying to get into the hotel a night earlier, and get United to change me (although with the 15A upgraded seat in the upper deck, i'm not giving that up for fireworks - i *do* live in Washington, DC, after all and we have some pretty cool fireworks here once a year ;-)

But seriously - if I can't make it a day earlier, I normally arrive around 8:30 am to the hotel, and after a quick trip to the gym and a shower (and a flat white or two) I'm good to go. So lunch/dinner/drinks is fine. There's a fun little bar on the harbour called Cargo we could meet at if that works...?

ozstamps Jan 9, 2003 6:17 pm

You have a Sydney Harbour Bridge in Washington? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Well I for one hear ya re giving up exit row 15 upstairs on a UA 747 for ANY reason! You never realise just HOW good UA is upstairs until you fly Thai. We had a shocker last week on TG "Business Class". The 1980s re-visited. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

If Monday lunch (27th) sounds best for you, AND if that also suits dmfreidman perhaps it is worth opting for that now to set something in stone? Wonder if Spider is also around that day?

dmfriedman Jan 9, 2003 9:27 pm

As I mentioned above, Monday's not very good for me. We're watching the SuperBowl as a team, then I've got my massage appointment. Then the Opera House. Can't you tell this is a business meeting? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I'm free almost any day other than Monday...

tinkybelle Jan 9, 2003 10:51 pm

Corbetti.
Dont plan on getting into the Four Points early n 27th.
the hotel will be sold out from the 26th Australia day celebrations .
They are not the easiest hotel to get along with when they are full as it is a HUGE hotel.
many a timeat this hotel I have been told checkin is 3 and that is that.-unless you have a prior arrangement!!
I am actually in the hotel the night before and we are leaving at 11 so we may be of some help there.
email me and we can talk.

Gaza Jan 10, 2003 4:39 pm

I'm still doing my tour around Australia. At the moment I'm in Melbourner, staying at the Hilton on the Park. Moving on tomorrow to Yarra Valley and/or Torquay. I will be in MEL Qantas Club on Tuesday catching the QF481 to PER. Will be staying at the Parmelia Hilton for one night before heading down to Dunsborough to do some diving. I'll be in Perth area until 25th January before heading for SYD on the overnight red-eye. I'll then be in Sydney until 31st January. Would be happy to meet up in any of those locations.

Actually - i really should look at my reservations more often. I'm in the Westin the first night on Martin Place, then i go to the Four Points on the 28th for the remainder of the week. Aahh, heavenly bed, here I come ;-)

Let's ink something in for lunch on monday. And then anyone who can't make monday we can meet up again during the week (I'm fairly flexible).

lonman Jan 11, 2003 3:42 pm

i'm there from the 24-27 after spending a week at the open up in mel. sounds great!!

willyroo Jan 15, 2003 10:31 pm

I'll be at the Qantas Club, at SYD domestic:

Tue 28 Jan - 11:00 to around 13:00
Wed 29 Jan - 15:00 to around 18:30 (beer time!!)

If you're around, be great to meet a fellow FTer or two - and can invite you in, for a meeting http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif , even if you're not flying that day.

Let me know by email if you're coming!

Gaza, what are you doing in SYD then?

(Edited to wink properly)

What a shame re the timing willyroo .. I opted for an 8.45am flight to MEL on that day to see Rudi. I suspect we will be having "meetings" in the SQ First Class lounge that evening, so kicking the day off with a "meeting" at QF would have been neat. I can change my flight to a bit later if that works, but no more than an hour or 2 as need to get into MEL by lunchtime. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

B Watson Jan 16, 2003 8:32 pm

Now that OZ pointed me to this thread, just to let you all know that I will be arriving on Monday at noon and while I am booked solid on Tuesday, Monday is very open at this point if people are getting together

ozstamps Jan 16, 2003 8:42 pm

If we get this happening I note B_Watson is staying at The Observatory. That place has THE classiest library bar in Sydney IMO. And those incredibly tall flutes they serve the Hahn Premium in are true engineering miracles. One vote for that if we get down to picking a venue. Then a classic Irish Pub, The Mercantile in The Rocks nearby maybe afterwards? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

In case you don't know, Rudi is also in town but I am waiting for him to read my message about meeting up in MEL.

SYD this time of year sounds like fun http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
i'm probably too busy, but sure is tempting.

ozstamps Jan 16, 2003 11:37 pm

willyroo - OK, on Q class tickets I know they will not allow changes - never fear. I am back into SYD Tuesday 28th 8pm. We will fluke a connection one day. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Ash-Mel ... Rudi emailed me a day or so back from a SQ lounge computer, so think he is still travelling perhaps?

I may be able to make this on the Monday with Glen. Does that look like the day decided upon?

dmfriedman Jan 19, 2003 12:08 am

I still haven't seen any form of "firm plans"... though having lost track of my workgroup get together for the Super Bowl, I'd certainly be willing to kick off the Monday lunch concept a bit early... the game starts at 10 a.m. Monday morning in SYD. If someone can recommend a good place (ideally not too far from the Four Seasons) to watch, and would like to join me, I'd be up for a FT SuperBowl party in SYD http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

kawoh Jan 19, 2003 4:08 am

dmfriedman, at this stage its 50/50 whether i'll be heading to BKK on Thurs 23/1. so if i'm free on Monday, would be great to catch up. I can suggest a couple of places no more than a 3-5 min walk from the 4seasons. The brooklyn, The metro, Establishment, Republic. All have TVs, cold beer and food. If i'm around on that Monday, i'll be free around 11-30 or so to head out. I'm only a few mins walk from your hotel.

corbetti Jan 19, 2003 6:58 am

monday sounds good to me. I land early that morning and after a quick shower/nap at the hotel, I can wander over anywhere. Just name the place and I'll be there. Sporting my very visible US Flag Rugby shirt, of course http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

B Watson Jan 20, 2003 7:15 pm

Do we have any plans yet gang? I am assuming we are aiming for Monday at this point. I am now departing Wednesday AM, but am still looking heavy on Tuesday.

dmfriedman Jan 20, 2003 9:57 pm

Okay, here's what I'm going to do... this weekend, I'll check out some of the places kawoh suggested. Before Sunday night, I will post here (at the top of this thread via an edit) a location for a SuperBowl get together at a pub on Monday. It will have to be some place that opens before 10 a.m., as that's game time, and I intend to sit butt-firmly-planted-in-seat from 10 until the Lombardi trophy is awarded. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

kawoh Jan 21, 2003 1:11 am

The Establishment (garden bar):

http://www.merivale.com/establishment

The Metro:

http://sydney.citysearch.com.au/E/V/SYDNE/0051/55/33/

Brooklyn:

Can't find a website, but they serve thai and western can get quite noisy with the wooden floors.

Republic:

New pub, on the corner of Bridge and Pitt Streets in the city, lots of TV's, a TAB, and a very nice restaurant on the top level.

Here is a list of pubs in the rocks area naer the 4seasons (some can be grubbier than others):

Avoid the Brooklyn if you are eating!! I work across the street and have been there several times for work functions.

Slow service, slow kitchen, mediocre food.

kawoh Jan 21, 2003 5:37 am

latitude, is this since they revised their menu? i think they have a new business running the food in there as of about 6-8 weeks ago, food came out in a flash (well less than 10 minutes...) but it really isn't the greatest place, the food was avg. establishment has a much nicer feel, don't know how loud the plasma screen tv's will be during the match.

now for the sad news, unfortunately i won't be able to make the catch up, i'm now confirmed to BKK.

I still like the earlier suggestion of meeting at B Watson's hotel and that superb library bar at The Observatory on Monday. Located in The Rocks basically so very central to Four Seasons (nee Regent) etc.
