The only upcoming events posted on the calendar are:
June: Washington
July: Toronto (Do in Exile)
August: Seattle (SEA DO)
Yet I've seen a recent flurry of great sounding Do's in Community. I'm getting confused as to what is when; posting to the calendar is a great way of keeping everything straight.

The Events Calendar is "out of the way" and suffers from severe technical problems ... it generally doesn't work for me. YMMV.
I'd just as well see it removed entirely to minimize confusion. It's poorly designed, and, IMHO, a bad idea to begin with. This forum is far more effective.

Perhaps you misuderstood - NO ONE is suggesting that threads not be posted in commnunites. But it is nice to have one place to go to be able to have an overview of what events are planned for what weekends. If you ever used it you would notice that there is then a click thru link to the thread in communities for more details

While the calendar may not be perfect, it certainly works and is not all that difficult to find for folks who look for it.
I know it may seem rudimentary to some of you who are extremely talented programmers, but it will do until someday, while one of you geniuses is on the bench, you decide to whip out something truly spectacular as a gift to the community.

I agree. I am planning a mileage run in July and thought how nice it would be to look at a calendar and pick a "do" to attend. Wading through these threads is particularly difficult when posters don't state the dates right in the thread title--a frequent occurrence.

I too am one who doesn't use the calender, has no desire to use it, its just out of the way. I dont have any problem whatsoever following when and where the do's are just by the threads. It is pretty simple to just read the titles and figure it out

jan_az: I think I understand just fine ... it's a case of good intentions gone awry. It would be nice if it worked, but it doesn't. The "idea" is fine, but the implementation is broken, which is to say, it hardly ever works for me. It fails in different ways depending on the particular WWW access device I happen to have in front of me at the time. I think I was able to view an event description once, and haven't been able to repeat that since.
Contrast this with the forums, which, except for occasional slow response and random "suicide-browser" banner ads, tend to be pretty reliable.
