question for Mariners fans
 

My boyfriend and I were planning to go to
this weekend's M's/Yankees game. He's
advised me *not* to wear anything Yankees-
related. He's convinced that there'll be a lot
of hostility and perhaps a physical altercation.

How true is this? Does Seattle hate NY *that*
much? I don't think I should fear for my safety
just because I'm rooting for my hometeam.
So maybe I should stay quiet? (But then again,
I'm not one to walk away from a good fight...)

also...I don't think the Pacific Northwest is *that* much
more civilized than the rest of the US. (I've lived there,
I know.) So don't LYAO too hard...

Generally speaking, people are nice in the NW;
however, if you're an outsider, people can be really
mean: more so in Seattle than in Portland. Some of
the most malevolent people I've encountered (as an
"outsider") were in Seattle, not New York. (This is just
my personal experience...I'm not trying to start a

simple use of the phrase "that much more" seems to admit that folks in the Pacific Northwest are more civilized.

Malevolence? Ever ask for directions in NY? Ever say HI and smile to a random person in NY? Ever try to start a conversation with someone who you don't know in NY?

Just don't use a big golf umbrella, don't jaywalk and you'll be fine in Seattle.

AGAIN, in conclusion, I feel that you will be perfectly fine wearing the "ugly NY apparel". The sports fans in Seattle are not of the same ilk as northeast sports fans (i.e. chasing folks out of Veterans Stadium for wearing an Aikman jersey OR throwing food at people in MSG for sporting an Elton Brand t-shirt). Although, those incidents can be found in other stadiums actoss the country, it is highly unlikely it will happen at Safeco, Key Arena, Seahawk Stadium, Bank of America Arena or Husky Stadium! It's simple, Seattle sports fans just aren't as rabid as sports fans in other cities.

I've seen plenty of Skanky, whoops I mean Yankee, gear at Mariners games and haven't witnessed any hostility. What annoys me is anyone rooting obnoxiously for the other team. Come to think of it, rooting obnoxiously for any team. You know--screaming right in my ear or at inappropriate times, etc. Just be civilized yourself and people will respond good naturedly back.

BTW, I hope you have tickets already, cuz ya can't just walk up and buy them.

And you can't start a "NY versus Seattle thing" and then just say you're not so only you get to be insulting.

As long as you don't drink too much and don't respond to the Mariner fans who scream "Yankees suck," you should be fine. That being said, the pain of the past two ALCS is palpable in Marinerville.

I WILL NOT get excited about the Mariner's regular season success. 116 wins doesn't mean a thing if you don't get to the World Series. I will get excited after they win their seventh post season game and are headed for the World Series.

All the time! And with positive results (most of the time)
Especially when I first moved here six years ago from (dare
I say it, lest I trigger another city-bashing thread) L.A. It's
interesting that your experiences here in NY are almost
exactly the same that I've had in the NW. My favorite is
when people in Seattle speak loudly and v e r y
s l o w l y to me so that I might understand their English
better. (Nevermind that I'm American-born). My point,
Chexfan, is that our respective experiences in different cities
have been and will be different. If (and that's a big "if") you're
ever in NY, look me up and I'll show you the nice side.

I started this thread out of a genuine curiosity about
Seattle fans' reactions to fans from other cities. My (PDX)
boyfriend was so adamant about the hatred that Seattle
has towards NY that I wanted to investigate it myself.
I was hoping to avoid the qualifiers and judgments, but
I guess that was wishful on my part.

I'm not even a die-hard Yankees fan anyway. I'm more of
a "bandwagon" fan anyway, since I live here now. (Kinda
like the newbie-bandwagon-Safeco Mariners fans). I've seen
for myself how harsh NY fans can get even *before* the game
starts (e.g., heckling the little girl singing the national anthem.)
That was brutal, but kind of funny...and *very* symbolic...

In closing...
Chexfan: I'm sorry I got into it with you. Maybe our paths
will cross in a RCC one day and we can talk over drinks
and say good things about the two cities (three cities, if you

I went to a Yankees game last week, and was reminded how "civilized" Seattle fans are, comparitively. You can wear anything you want to the game, and the fans won't make anywhere near as much of a deal, as if you had said the opposites team name in Yankee Stadium. Have a great time. What day are you going? I'm thinking about going Saturday, so I still have Fri/Sun tickets left.

had ten extra tickets this morning for Saturday's game. Unfortunately,
he said he feels compelled to divulge the fact that I'm a Yankees fan
because the co-worker might rethink passing along some of his season
tickets to a New Yorker. I haven't heard back yet, so I'm assuming
that we've been declined the tickets. (oh well...)
