question for Mariners fans

My boyfriend and I were planning to go to
this weekend's M's/Yankees game. He's
advised me *not* to wear anything Yankees-
related. He's convinced that there'll be a lot
of hostility and perhaps a physical altercation.

How true is this? Does Seattle hate NY *that*
much? I don't think I should fear for my safety
just because I'm rooting for my hometeam.
So maybe I should stay quiet? (But then again,
I'm not one to walk away from a good fight...)

Umm... the game at Safeco? LMAO

This is the Pacific Northwest. Not NY, Philly, etc. I wouldn't fear wearing the ugly NY apparel in SEA. Just make sure you can run quick! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/tongue.gif

"ugly apparel" huh?...as if Lumberjack-land is a fashion
mecca... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

also...I don't think the Pacific Northwest is *that* much
more civilized than the rest of the US. (I've lived there,
I know.) So don't LYAO too hard...

Generally speaking, people are nice in the NW;
however, if you're an outsider, people can be really
mean: more so in Seattle than in Portland. Some of
the most malevolent people I've encountered (as an
"outsider") were in Seattle, not New York. (This is just
my personal experience...I'm not trying to start a
NY vs. Seattle thing.) http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Chexy,

I anxiously await your answer. And be nice. I met Yummyham and she's OK.

YH,

Let me know how they treat you. I'll be at the SEA DO in August; and we're all going to see the Yankees once again clip Seattle's wings. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif <<< will be wearing my YANKEE cap.

simple use of the phrase "that much more" seems to admit that folks in the Pacific Northwest are more civilized.

Malevolence? Ever ask for directions in NY? Ever say HI and smile to a random person in NY? Ever try to start a conversation with someone who you don't know in NY?

Just don't use a big golf umbrella, don't jaywalk and you'll be fine in Seattle.

well you're doing a good job at it.

AGAIN, in conclusion, I feel that you will be perfectly fine wearing the "ugly NY apparel". The sports fans in Seattle are not of the same ilk as northeast sports fans (i.e. chasing folks out of Veterans Stadium for wearing an Aikman jersey OR throwing food at people in MSG for sporting an Elton Brand t-shirt). Although, those incidents can be found in other stadiums actoss the country, it is highly unlikely it will happen at Safeco, Key Arena, Seahawk Stadium, Bank of America Arena or Husky Stadium! It's simple, Seattle sports fans just aren't as rabid as sports fans in other cities.

TravelWeary Apr 23, 2002 5:56 pm

I've seen plenty of Skanky, whoops I mean Yankee, gear at Mariners games and haven't witnessed any hostility. What annoys me is anyone rooting obnoxiously for the other team. Come to think of it, rooting obnoxiously for any team. You know--screaming right in my ear or at inappropriate times, etc. Just be civilized yourself and people will respond good naturedly back.

BTW, I hope you have tickets already, cuz ya can't just walk up and buy them.

And you can't start a "NY versus Seattle thing" and then just say you're not so only you get to be insulting.

As long as you don't drink too much and don't respond to the Mariner fans who scream "Yankees suck," you should be fine. That being said, the pain of the past two ALCS is palpable in Marinerville.

I WILL NOT get excited about the Mariner's regular season success. 116 wins doesn't mean a thing if you don't get to the World Series. I will get excited after they win their seventh post season game and are headed for the World Series.

Go Mariners!

You're right that I can't say that I don't want to start

simply responding to the unnecessary "ugly" modifier
used by Chexfan.

<"Ever ask for directions in NY? Ever say HI and smile to

with someone who you don't know in NY?">
All the time! And with positive results (most of the time)
Especially when I first moved here six years ago from (dare
I say it, lest I trigger another city-bashing thread) L.A. It's
interesting that your experiences here in NY are almost
exactly the same that I've had in the NW. My favorite is
when people in Seattle speak loudly and v e r y
s l o w l y to me so that I might understand their English
better. (Nevermind that I'm American-born). My point,
Chexfan, is that our respective experiences in different cities
have been and will be different. If (and that's a big "if") you're
ever in NY, look me up and I'll show you the nice side.

I started this thread out of a genuine curiosity about
Seattle fans' reactions to fans from other cities. My (PDX)
boyfriend was so adamant about the hatred that Seattle
has towards NY that I wanted to investigate it myself.
I was hoping to avoid the qualifiers and judgments, but
I guess that was wishful on my part.

I'm not even a die-hard Yankees fan anyway. I'm more of
a "bandwagon" fan anyway, since I live here now. (Kinda
like the newbie-bandwagon-Safeco Mariners fans). I've seen
for myself how harsh NY fans can get even *before* the game
starts (e.g., heckling the little girl singing the national anthem.)
That was brutal, but kind of funny...and *very* symbolic...

In closing...
Chexfan: I'm sorry I got into it with you. Maybe our paths
will cross in a RCC one day and we can talk over drinks
and say good things about the two cities (three cities, if you
want to include LA.) http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

to the rest:
thank you for the useful and humorous responses.

mymiles2go Apr 23, 2002 8:32 pm

I went to a Yankees game last week, and was reminded how "civilized" Seattle fans are, comparitively. You can wear anything you want to the game, and the fans won't make anywhere near as much of a deal, as if you had said the opposites team name in Yankee Stadium. Have a great time. What day are you going? I'm thinking about going Saturday, so I still have Fri/Sun tickets left.

Mikey Apr 23, 2002 9:41 pm

Hi,

You'll be fine wearing any team apparel you like - even the Yankees, as long as you do not get too boisterous about the Yanks.

But even then, all you'll get back from being boisterous is a bunch of yells and catcalls.

Wear the Yankees gear, I say. Just don't sit next to me! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/tongue.gif

(Actually, I do not have any tix to the Yankee series - phooey!)

WHOA WHOA WHOA there Chex. Lumping Husky football fans together with the rest of the Seattle sports scene is a big no-no. There is a huge difference between the rabidity of Dawg fans and the rest of Seattle's sporting landscape. Dawgs fans care about their football team through thick and thin.

Thank you, flytoeat. There need to be more M's fans who do not think that 116 wins is so darn special. Getting to the World Series is special, and until they get there, they will be underacheivers/chokers.

About the only hostility in the Northwest is between Washington and Wazzou, and even more between Washington and Oregon. Hostility over baseball? ROTFLMAO!

Ahh... the wonderful lack of understanding due to the written word on the internet.

The "ugly NY apparel" I was referring may have been veiled in my first reply, however, if anyone took the time to read my second reply, they would notice that when I said "NY", I was referring to one of the Yankees logos (click here if you missed it the first time). It was not an attack on the wordrobe of all New Yorkers as you so personally took it. *yawn* http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/rolleyes.gif

If you have time, I would truly appreciate it if you could show me how to transpose the Y over the N, in text, next time so this misunderstanding can be avoided going into the future.

I must say, however, I am strongly offended with you calling Seattle "Lumberjack-land". I have a friend who was seriously injured and has a permanent injury due to a freak chainsaw accident. He was wearing a flannel shirt at the time. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

Anyways, I don't see the personal vendetta against me? I say N-Y apparel is "ugly" and the guns come out a blazin'. Yet, TW calls it "skanky", and it's alright? Gee that makes alot of sense. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/confused.gif

I have luckily just ended an eight month tour of heading to the New York/New Jersey area on a weekly basis. I guess it may upset you that your insinuation that I have no experience in The Big Apple is completely incorrect.

Regarding the "nice side" I was hoping that the other New York locals would have done this already. But to no avail, that is, unless you consider the wonderful Latvian Gaucho100k, A Freak and I met! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

And I truly fail to see how my first reply didn't do this. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif It was answered quickly and matter of factly that it would be silly to worry about being harassed in Seattle for wearing Yankees garb.

The simple notion of a Yankee fan "fearing their safety" at Safeco for simply wearing their teams colors made me Laugh My A55 Off. I would think when I replied:

the game at Safeco? LMAO

Honestly, you can safely wear anybody's paraphernalia in Yankee Stadium, except Boston's. We have to draw the line somewhere. Neither would I wear my hat in Fenway, unless I was suitably accompanied.

Why would you go down that road? Obviously, I had no idea about
your injured friend and what he was wearing. If I did, I certainly would
have had the manners and tact to avoid making such a reference.
Whereas you continually criticize the logo of a team that was adored

Ding ding ding: new FT low

Dragging 9/11 and the alleged adoration of the Yankmes into this discussion.

How many ways can we pander to that travesty? What's next? Bashing the DeadSox for trading Babe Ruth? Links to fake pictures of Osama wearing Mariners logo gear?

Go D'backs...

Had a nice email from yummyham who is concerned about her post and how some of us have interpreted same. As most of us realize, it is difficult to convey tone and almost all that we write can be (mis)construed.

Personally, I sincerely apologize for the first line of my post (above). Considering all the events I've seen on FT, yummyham's post is hardly a new FT low.

Upon review, I have made one comment describing New York Yankees clothing and referenced it one other time. Yet someone else has mentioned it four times in their posts, and I am the one who is "continually" bringing it up? I wonder what Misters Merriam and Webster would have to say about that one?

Anyways, being a fan of glass artwork by Dale Chihuly (everyone should see his stuff on display at the Seattle Art Museum while you're in town.) and glass in general, it's a shame my real estate agent friend in NYC didn't alert me to the abundance of glass apartments on sale in the metro area.

God, I LOVE these kind of threads.

Ok! My 17 cents:

New York: Better strip clubs and Broadway is pretty cool. Definitely best restaurants. But face it folks, you are rude and agressive. Take it as I mean it: a compliment.

LA: Best enjoyed one Yard(house) at a time. The laidbackness hides a wicked passive-agressive streak.

Seattle: I've yet to meet anyone there that I didnt like. But the laidbackness hides some serious fascist tendencies (try walking against the light and you'll see what I mean).

Portland: Well, VSOI. www.portlandf*ckingsucks.com

As for baseball, I quit caring once the players and owners raped the fans out of the World Series. Why would ANYONE care to support those bloated arrogant cretons? Sure, I still go to an ocassional game (including, in the past year a Yankee, Orioles, Mariners, Dodgers and Giants game). OK, maybe more then ocassiona, but frankly I go for the beer and leave once it stops flowing...

And to get back on topic, I wore a San Francisco 49ers cap to the Mariners game last summer, and was left well enough alone...of course I was sitting in the first row of the club level, so......

I'm not going to compare the Washington football program to Notre Dame or Penn State or Ohio State (although in the past 3 years the purple and gold have been far more successful than that trio.). Actually, I will compare it to Notre Dame, where half the fans sold their tickets to Nebraska fans 2 years ago. Off the top of my head, OSU, PSU, Tennessee, the Florida schools, Nebraska, Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas and Texas A&M probably have better fans. But thats about it.

I was simply comparing Husky football fans to fans of other Seattle sporting entities. In this comparison, the devotion of Dawg fans far eclipses the devotion of Mariner, Sonic and Seahawk fans.

As for a UO/UW game at Husky Stadium, unless it wasn't football, it was 3 years ago. Huck the Fuskies isn't uncommon; we got that from K-State fans and Texas fans at the Holiday bowls. If it was the UW victory at night 3 seasons ago vs. Oregon, then I don't know what our fans were doing. I do know, however, the Colorado fans were definately harassed in 1999. I know that Oregon alums who drive to Eugene from the state of Washington find their cars (thanks to their WA state tags) vandalized. I know that Oregon fans throw dog feces on Husky players in Eugene. And Oregon receives similar treatment from us. Its not the same level as other rivalries, but its the best of the worst the Northwest has to offer.

Back to the thread. Wear whatever the heck you want to Safeco field. No one cares. In fact, I hope there are lots of Yankee fans in the stadium this weekend. It will show how sad Mariners' ticket holders are for selling their tickets while their team plays some of the best regular season baseball in history.

GoCanes Apr 25, 2002 2:50 pm

People are mauled weekly in Seattle for wearing Yankees gear. I've seen groups drag people to Westlake Center and stone them. It is not safe. Don't wear a Yankees shirt. Your life could be in danger.

Just kidding. You should be fine. Maybe a couple of hecklers in the stands, all I could foresee.

whlinder Apr 28, 2002 5:49 pm

So aside from the Mariners, was anyone beaten or abused at this weekend's series?
