A question about meeting at FT events

I hope to attend an FT event sometime and meet some of you great people! Like some others, I am not always the best at remembering names so I am quite curious.

At FT events do most people go by their real names or their FT handles?

It depends. It seems that most all FTers ask if you want to be called by your handle or your real name. I really don't care and if you drop the Cinq from my handle it is pretty darn close to my real name.

Sometimes you automatically call people by their handle because you can't remember their real name even if it is easy.

What Chanel (with a J) said and the added note that at larger events there are often name tags on which your handle is shown but to which you can append your real name with a pen.

I address all FlyerTalkers by their handles only. If for no other reason than there are too **** many Marks/Marcs out there.

I tend to be addressed by my first name pretty quickly. I guess in the beginning it's by handle and then once you get to know people better you move on to the first name?

For me it doesn't matter...

I have a real name and people call me that way.

For flyertalkers it depends on what I remember at the time.

But I find it a sign of affection when folks like my BIG BRUDDAR PremEx call me "CATMAN" Or I'm called "Catbuddy," or "Cat" "Catdude" or "catty" (in a nice sense.)

Most people can't keep the real names and the handles straight.

I've only met one or two people who insist on their real name.

And you are right Mistah Love: there are too many DARN marc's and Marks out there.

TO keep me simple: call THIS MARK "CATMAN"

My handle IS my first name. That may not be "cool," and it would make it harder to stay anonymous if I ever wanted to, but it's one way to avoid the problem.

The real reason, though, is I just couldn't think of a good handle at the time. There was something I wanted to post, I didn't want to wait until I thought of a better one, and then it never seemed worth changing.

Just as for CATMAN, for me it simply doesn't matter and either "doc" or Mark does just fine - particularly since I've been called worse in my time - sometimes a lot worse!

I answer to either one; unlike Catman or efrem, I intentionally picked a name of ambiguous gender (which has surprised at least one person who has met me at an FT event!).

I am one of those people who suffer from never remembering any ones name shortly after it has been told to me. So I am always asking everyone what their name is.
And I go by the adage that you can call me anything you want just don't call me "late for dinner"

Punki is the name I have been called since I was a baby. I was surprised when I started school to discover that I had another name.
