What's Indianapolis like?
I'm exploring an opportunity that would have me in Indianapolis two days a week... a city about which I know nothing. Is this a town worth spending a third of my week in - every week? At least I can fly there on USAIR, so my status may be preserved after all

About as middle America as it gets. I did quite a bit of work there a few years ago. Not all that much to do at night. Lots of your basic suburban type of stuff, malls, that sort of thing. Better deli food than San Francisco, but that's not saying much.
I've met some wonderful people in Indianapolis, it's a very friendly place. I wonder how many of the locals are on prozac?
(That was not meant as a dig, the company that makes Prozac is HQ'ed in Indianapolis.)

With all due respect to Doc, its better than it was 10 years ago.
It isn't Chicago (I lived there from 1985-1989), but as a city it has a lot going for it, including cheap housing, decent schools, virtually no traffic, and service by Southwest to keep the other carriers honest.
Its a 3 hour drive to Chicago, 2 hours to Cincinnati, and 5 to St. Louis.
I lived there from 1989 to 2000. I'm living in Toronto now, and will most likely be moving back to Indy in 2003.
I work for one of the largest private employers in town (Eli Lilly and Company) I'd be happy to answer any questions here or in email.

I spent 4+ days a week in Topeka for a few months. Indy has to be better!!
On my one and only business trip to Indy we stayed at the hotel where Mike Tyson became a felon. Actually it is a nice hotel, with a fine restaurant, but I have no idea of the name! I sure am lots of help.
Oh, but Indy has White Castles!!!!!!!!!!

From Feb. '99 through this past Spring I made eight trips to IND. I had never been there before '99. Initial reaction was pleasant surprise. My pre-conceived notion was it was going to be mid-western "rust belt", but what I found was an attractive city that had clearly gone through some significant upscaling over the last decade. From the center of downtown, north to Broad Ripple, it is very appealing.
Weather is the only downside. I once spent 3.75 hours on a United plane (from the time I entered until I left the jetway) trying to get to ORD. Normally the flight is 34 minutes! When IND gets an ice storm, time to face reality. You ain't going anywhere quickly!

The best part about Indy is that it is about an hour away from Bloomington, the home of Indiana University. It's the most beautiful place in Indiana (I'm not toooo biased about my former school). As for Indy, it's really a nice city - you need a car to get around because it is sprawled out but it is relatively inexpensive compared to Chicago and it has a lot to offer. The people there are nice and friendly - it's that "Hoosier" thang. All in all, if I couldn't be in Chicago, I'd certainly settle for Indy if I had to be in the Midwest (that's s'posed to be a compliment).

Thanks for the links! I have discovered there is community theatre (which I love) AND a Nordstrom's!!!!! So how bad could it be??? I would worry about getting stuck there in winter, but if there's a Hilton or a Starwood property near the client, then I should do fine!

I lived in Indy from 1999-2001. As a young single guy I found few social outlets aside from the bars in Broad Ripple (a near north neighborhood). Depending on your needs, your mileage may vary.
However, if you're a golfer, there are some great, cheap tracks in and around Indy. I'd be happy to shoot you a list. Just send me an email. You can probably play every month of the year, though of course not every day.
Indy also is a great sports town. Pacers and Colts are good, solid teams that play in high-quality venues. The Indianapolis Indians (AAA) have one of the nicest non-major league parks in the system. Of course, the Indy 500 and Brickyard 500 are unparalleled in motorsports.
Now that I'm in Chicago, I primarily miss the easy, cheap access to golf. Though Chicago has other redeeming qualities.
