Trading Miles Allowed?

I want to trade 60,000 delta miles for American Miles. Is that allowed?

gruezi dancyn4 (gruezi = Hi in swiss german): [*]the airlines (their ff-programsI don't allow it.[*]to my knowledge (I know more about UA and LH than about DL and AA), there are technical obstacles too: I don't know how to transfer Delta and/or AA miles into each other traders' account too[*]There might be a technical way to 'gift'/'trade'/'barter' awards (bought with miles) to each other.

such requests/questions/discussions are better placed under the The Coupon Connection forum.

As Rudi so aptly pointed out, this topic is probably better off in other forums. I would say that The Coupon Connection is likely to draw some attention for action on this, though The Buzz is likely to debate the philosophical nature of your question. As Rudi notes, it is against all programs rules to buy, sell or barter awards. The practical matter is that "Friends and Family" trades is quite common, though with pitfalls. I know many who have dealt with extended friends only to find out later on that the promise of miles later on was simply a case of vapor-miles. I'm sure this question posted elsewhere will get you plenty of comments to draw your conclusions on. One bit of advice - while the community of FlyerTalkers is an unusually large and kind one, I would adivse you to not conduct any business with strangers, no matter the circumstances. You may be exposing yourself to less than you are bargaining for and you may also be putting your miles and the other persons miles in danger - yes, the mileage police lurk everywhere.......

Welcome to FlyerTalk, dancyn4. What is it you are trying to accomplish with a miles transfer? If you can be specific, it would be helpful. FlyerTalkers possess a wealth of information and knowledge and there may be some very creative possibilities that have been overlooked. Perhaps we can be of assistance in meeting your goal, if we know know what it is.

I am taking my mother and two children from LAX to frankfurt returning from nice with a 2 day stop over in London then back to LAX. Each ticket costs 60k miles or $1600.00. I have 180k miles and I am trying to get the other 60k in AA miles. I have them on delta but I don't want my mom to fly alone. Any help would be great.

Thank you

There may be ways you can get the AA miles you need yourself.

Do you have miles, Amex points, Diners Club points or any hotel points you can transfer to American Advantage? For example, do you have any Marriott Reward points, or HHonors points or any other hotel program points?

Is 60k DL Skymiles all that you have, or do you have more?

You can transfer your DL skymiles to AA (via Diners Club - $85 fee + bonuses) at the rate of 2 DL -> 1 AA mile. You can get a Citibank Platinum World Mastercard ($85 annual fee) with a 7.5k AA mile bonus. There are other things you can do, but they all take time.

I have some time since I will not be travelling until June. I'd love to hear any other suggestions you hear of. Thank you for taking the time to respond to me.

If the trip is in June you don't have all that much time because you can't wait till the last minute to check for award availability. Have you done that yet for the three tickets on AA? In fact, you might end up having to put one person on another flight, anyway, unless you have something else we can use fairly quickly to get you the other 60k Advantage miles. (A good thing would be 200k Marriott Rewards points .. any chance you have them?)

There's a very easy way to get 30k DL Skymiles, Apply for the DL/Amex Gold Skymiles card (annual fee $85) with the 10k bonus plus an additional 10k bonus after charging 10k within 6 months. The first 10k posts within a month or two, but it takes time to get the rest of it, but that 10k can be added to anything you already have in the skymiles account and transferred at a 2:1 ratio through Diners Club to AA.

Others have reported better Citibank/AA bonus offers than I listed above. (10k + a companion cert .. look into that).

Do you have other miles or hotel points that can be used for this trip? There's often interesting ways to transfer miles around (usually at a loss), but you might have stuff you don't know can be transferred at a decent ratio. Somebody with all those miles probably does travel a lot, so I would be surprised if there isn't other stuff that can be used here.

Let us know what else you have and we'll see what we can come up with.

Do you have any US Airways miles?

There's a way to combine AA and US miles until Aug 23. I'm not too knowledgable on this program, but I think this could work for you also.
