WHERE We All Are - FlyerTalk Map??

Hey! Now that we know Who We Are, how about where we are? I suggest a FlyerTalk map.

It could be fairly high level to protect people's privacy. We could at least have a map showing by state/province/country the number of FlyerTalk members, perhaps thematically shaded.

I am willing to do the map and we could post it to a web site. Does this interest anyone? Anyone have ideas on how to go about collecting everyone's whereabouts?

Excellent idea. You could easily begin with a thread to have those interested simply list a participating FTer's "handle" and primary airport code.

With the little advertising space next to our messages, I've noticed some folks doing that already (myself included).

I think it is a terrific idea. I watch the itineraries to see if anyone is coming into my area. When dgolds was in Boston not too long ago, I did set something up before catching the flu and having to stay home

Great idea. It would be interesting to see the real geographic distribution of flyertalkers.

One of the thing I proposed to Randy at the PIP was a F-T locator, though I never followed up on it with him afterwards.

I like the idea of a map or locator.

Gee, I thought we were frequent flyers? How could you do a fixed map? I'm rarely in one place for more than 5 days.

Great idea TravelWeary! Would you do the honors of starting a map? Where will you post it though? Will you ba able to click on a location on the map (i.e., by state/province/region) and have a list of FTalkers in the area with their corresponding primary airport codes?

I was thinking about cancelling this idea due to lack of interest, but it looks like there may be some interest out there. I am extremely busy with work right now, so I am doing nothing on this right now but thinking (hard work for me). One of the biggest problems will be collecting the data, but I like the suggestion of a thread where people voluntarily post their primary airport code (thanks doc).

Hopefully the dust will settle when I return from PHX next week (and a mini FLyerTalk event in PDX) and I can get to work on this. I really appreciate all of your suggestions and ideas so far.

Travel Weary,

Let me know if you need help on this. I have mapping software on one of our household's laptops which can do US mapping based on zip codes.

Thanks, BillMorrow. I manage the geodemographic research system for my company, including mapping, so access to the software is not an issue. As always, time is the usual problem. Once I get started, this will be fun.

I like the idea of people signing up voluntarily and listing by airport codes.
Great idea, TravelWeary!
