A reminder to all...

All right folks, this is my first, last, and only comment on the recent on-goings...

In the little over two years that FT has been around, we've gotten the attention and respect of the industry. This does not happen with name calling, mud slinging, and pissing matches. I personally do not want to loose the members of the industry that now post and respond directly to us. If we do loose them, only we are to blame.

So I suggest that some thought be put behind what you're posting, and a little diplomacy wouldn't hurt either.

Coudn't agree more. If you don't like it don't read it -- something I do every day, here and elsewhere.

Sebastien,

You could not have said it any better - or more simply.

I would like to second what burkey and SMessier said.

There are many employees from airlines actively posting on the boards, and I'm sure that employees from other companies are also lurking, hearing what we have to offer.

Randy and crew have recognized us for our difference in the industry, and as a FlyerTalker just like the next (even though I'm much newer than some), I would hate to lose this recognition.

Without sounding like an old mother, please, guys, use judgement. If you have a problem or gripe with another FTer, take it outside (via e-mail), not on boards. It's not worth it. In the future, ignore their posts and replies. As a community, we have gone far, and I'm afraid we are going to lose some of the finest, most interesting FlyerTalkers due to some poor judgement.

Off my soap box.

(PS: You won't notice any smilies here to lighten the mood of my post, because I don't think that this is a laughing matter. I love this community just like everyone else, and I don't want to see it crumble.)

AND...

we would all be responsible if we don't take and advocate specific steps to maintin the quality and dignity of our board. The folks who said and did nothing as the idiots flamed away at our friends and newcomers to this community would be just as responsible for the loss of industry credibility as the flamers themselves.

This is soooooo important; I feel we are really at a crossroads on this board, and I thank Dr. Burkey for injecting a little bit of reality.

Those of us who've been at this a while know that we've created something unique in, and for the benefit of, the travel industry, with Randy and crew providing the tools, and we shouldn't let anyone tear it down without fighting back.

Mandatory e-mail registrations would be a big help.

Add my name to the list of those who agree! I do not see why any of us would be averse to registering.

Perhaps a bit of respectful disagreement with NJDavid about "remaining silent" - My feeling is that such posters do not warrant a response, nor the encouragement responses can often bring.

Though new to the board, I do not see myself being chased away by the likes of offensive posters.

RichG and NJDavid:
With all due respect, I believe it is the "we must fight back" mentality that perpetuates these things. Defending the honor of a friend is a noble intention, but trolls hiding in the anonymity of the Internet are not subject to the face-to-face confrontations. 100 people coming forward to challenge them is not intimidating - it is the opportunity to spout off 100 times.

If everyone just left these posts unanswered, the trolls would get tired at punching at air and go infect some other site.

When a new user attacks some of the older contributors here, we all recognize that this is just some weenie looking to score some points in a game that only he is keeping score in.

The folks here are big boys and girls. We don't need to defend them except in cases where someone is truly challenging their integrity.

Hardly a night goes by during the Little League season where my sanity, intelligence, judgment, integrity and family heritage isn't challenged by someone. I let them wind themselves down and hang up. Why defend myself from an idiot? I know I'm right, I know they're a jerk and I know that no amount of talking will make them realize how stupid they are.

I wholeheartedly agree with burkey and NJDavid. It's sad when a veteren poster such as Punki starts a wonderful thread http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum94/HTML/001926.html
and has to watch it degenerate into a futile war of slings and arrows that have little or nothing to do with the sentiment she wished to convey. Perhaps there should be some discussion of this at the FAQ.
