Bay Area Krispy Kreme
(I imagine this might belong in OMNI, but as it made me feel like a true member of the FT Community, I took the liberty of posting here.)
Yesterday morning I got up at an unhealthy hour for a Saturday and trekked to the new Krispy Kreme in the Bay Area, with my mom in tow. It was completely out of our way but the store has been open for almost two weeks, so it was time.
Luckily, we only had to wait in line for about 15 minutes before claiming our dozen. The boxes were simply flying out of the place! A local milk company had set up a promo truck outside with free flavored milk sample bottles and, if you ignored the risk of being mowed down by overzealous doughnut devotees, it was almost a party.
I marveled over the size of the line that had developed by the time we'd stuffed ourselves on the still-warm delights while sitting at the outdoor tables. I think that most East coast residents with KK in their area would think we were nuts for standing in line like that for doughnuts. (But then, we pretty much end up waiting in line for everything around here these days. Welcome to the new Russia-with-Wealth.) And this was a good day -- I'd heard that at midnight the previous Friday there was a 45-minute wait out the door and a 3/4-mile line of cars for the drive-through.
After all, I pretty much ignored the place the whole time I was at college in Scranton, PA. (Gasp, the horror, I know.) I'd reaquainted myself with them when I was back there in February and while they were good, I wasn't sold on the buzz I heard about the opening in this area. Then I got back home, joined FT a few weeks later, and wondered if I'd missed something!
Now, however, I'm sold. The doughnuts were simply fantastic and I'm anxiously awaiting the opening of a second location nearer to my home. In the meantime, what's a little less sleep on a Saturday?

ThirdDegree: I beat you to the punch last year: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum...ML/000431.html
I also beat you to the donut. Had my first one from the Union City store last Wednesday. One of the fellows I was working with lives in Union City, and he brought 4 dozen in, 2 dozen glazed and two dozen assorted.
(Union City has suddenly acquired cachet.)
After making sure that I had gotten my share of glazed donuts, I started screaming at the people who were about to choose from among the cake donuts and crullers, "NO, NO, THE GLAZED, THE GLAZED!" Most people don't know from Krispy Kreme in the Bay Area. (They will soon enough...) The glazed donuts disappeared after several minutes, while the cake donuts and crullers sat pathetically on the table the rest of the day.
Myself, I've been eatin' em' since I was a tyke - back then, with a glass of milk, but nowadays, with a cup o' coffee. Sure is nice to see that we finally have a decent place to eat here in the Bay Area.
By the way, sorry to give you the third degree, and welcome to the "community." It's always good to have someone else from the area on board.

I'm sitting here reading F-T, listening to 60 Minutes, and trying to decide if I want to eat some ice cream or have a muffin.
Then youse guys start in with the KK stuff...... G-r-r-r-r-r
It'll be another 6 months until we get a KK here in the Portland area.
dgolds, next time you come to visit your brother, bring 'em. We'll pay!!!

Oh, I saw and read your thread, dgolds -- as it wasn't "news" but merely a report I didn't feel this belonged there!
I almost went up there the Friday after they opened to bring some to the office for a doughnut taste-off we were having, but decided that driving from San Jose to Union City then back to Sunnyvale was insane during a commute...even for Krispy Kreme!
After we'd gorged ourselves on inferior product that day (though it was fun), it came out that I was the only one there who'd ever had a Krispy Kreme doughnut. So I had to try to explain the mystique. I have a feeling we'll be having an office field trip once the Mountain View store opens.
Oh, and sorry to make you salivate, shadow!
