DO it Wright - Dayton, OH - Dates TBD

The topic of hosting a Dayton DO has come up a few times in http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/delta...come-5761.html, so I've decided to make a thread to judge interest. I may or may not be the lead POC for the event itself.

Dayton is the home of the Wright Brothers, and there are numerous historical sites relating to the history of aviation in the area. I won't spend too long detailing them here, but this TripAdvisor page does an excellent job. In short, there are a collection of sites run by the National Park Service, including the Wright Cycle Co, and the National Museum of the US Air Force.

The Air Force Museum consists of three hangars open to the public and a fourth hangar within the base complex that is only open to those with base access. I have a friend who volunteers at the museum, so I'll talk to him about setting up a behind-the-scenes tour. I'll also look into seeing if our group could get permission to access the fourth hangar.

GRALISTAR and I are both new to the area, but we have been scouting out the local watering holes. The Oregon District contains a number of bars and restaurants including a local favorite, Dublin Pub. We'll probably spend at least one evening in that area.

Dayton doesn't seem to have too many hotels near downtown. There is a Crowne Plaze within walking distance of the Oregon district and a Marriott not far away. There are numerous options near the bast and museum. I'll defer to others for now on a hotel choice since I live here.

As far as timing, my initial thought is to do this early next year, in the February to April time-frame. I'm flexible and willing to take input. Comment if you're interested in attending, and let me know if there are other things you think we should add or if you have an opinion on timing.

I will make every effort to join this DO!

It goes without saying that I will be there. :)

Now that's what I wanted to hear! :D

I can't confirm since I don't have dates, but if we decide before the end of the year, I'll be able to. I try not to put anything on my calendar more than a month out, so I' wide open February to April -- except the Cardinals opening day in St. Louis.

jackal Oct 25, 2014 4:40 pm

Count me as interested!

This year won't work, as I'm traveling through the new year, but depending on dates, early next year could work. Keep us updated!

bowdenj Oct 25, 2014 6:47 pm

Sounds like a plan! Hmmmm... flights IND - DAY - IND !

kipper Oct 25, 2014 8:11 pm

Next year should work for me. :)

Even I drive that !!

As long as the dates work out count me in! Other than the first week of March I should be available.

One update on the Air Force Museum - access to the fourth hangar (which houses the Presidential aircraft) is once again available to the general public. The shuttle bus service for those without base access, which was suspended during fiscal year 2013 due to sequestration budget cuts, has now been restored. One does need to sign up first thing in the morning as the slots can sometimes fill up.

Although not aviation related, any car nuts may be interested in the Packard Museum downtown.

I am local (born and raised) so if anyone has questions or needs assistance with anything, let me know.

Assuming the dates work out with any potential work travel, I will certainly be there.

No preference on dates....

I like BJs exit 41 I-75 West Carrolton/Miamisburg, but for BBQ lovers Smokey Bones much nearer DAY airport is good. Downtown Miamisburg there is also a fun place - but I will bow to local knowledge as I have only lived there 2 months.^:)

As long as you route through LAX, that should work. :D

Some random thoughts from "local knowledge"...

Downtown Miamisburg can be fun for a "pub crawl" type of night. Compact and easily walkable between several good, local venues. (Bullwinkles-the rib place, Ron's Tavern, Star City Brewing, TJ Chumps, and more) However, it is not very convenient to the airport nor downtown Dayton area.

I have always enjoyed "The Pub", located at the Greene (I-675/Indian Ripple). It has a bit more "chain" feel to it then I usually like, but decent food and even better selection of drafts/drinks.

Depending on how the events shape up, the Oregon district is probably a good place to spend some time. About a 2 block area of historic buildings now housing restaurants, bars, and other eclectic businesses.

Thai 9 - Thai and sushi http://www.thai9restaurant.com/Main.html
I am spoiled by spending so much time in Thailand, so I typically don't visit Thai places here, but Thai 9 gets good reviews.

Jay's seafood: http://www.jays.com/ Another Oregon District favorite. Has a private room that seats up to 35 available except on Fridays. May be a bit too pricey?

Another possibility is El Mason, located just a short drive away alongside I-75. http://www.elmeson.net/
a full-fledged, full time Hispanic-fusion restaurant.
They also have some space for private parties...and a rather wicked Mojito if my booze-hazed memory is accurate. :D

Put me on the interested list. I was at the museum in 2012 and I spent three hours and don't feel I spent nearly enough time. I'd love to come back so if i can swing this, I will be there.

Also, I agree the Packard Museum is worth a visit too.

HPN-HRL Oct 28, 2014 8:46 pm

Hi all,

Please add me to the "as long as the dates work out, count me in" group. Avios availability LGA-CMH has been very good on weekends, so even if I can't fly to DAY cheaply I can drive from CMH.

Sweet Willie Oct 29, 2014 8:22 am

I will likely drive from Chicago, so if the dates work & I am going, any Chicago area FTer would be welcome to ride along with.

dat4life Oct 29, 2014 10:23 am

As long as the dates work, I'm definitely in.

mattp1987 Oct 29, 2014 10:42 am

Glad to see all the interest. Thanks for the pointers people have added in. I just hit two months here, so I'm still learning. The info about the museum shuttle is great news!

It sounds like most of us are booked up through 2014, so we'll aim for first quarter of 2015. I'll tentatively say March for now.

I'm flying DAY-LGA-DAY for 4500 Avios each way this weekend, so don't count out that option. I think AA flies it 3x per day.

I also strongly prefer a weekend; in the Feb-Apr time frame I can't make President's Day weekend or the middle two weekends in March but on any other weekend in that time frame my attendance probability is 90%+.

mattp1987 Oct 31, 2014 12:39 pm

My Spring is more booked than I realized already. I propose the following weekends.

Feb 23-25
Feb 27 - March 1
March 7-8
April 10-12

I'd prefer it not to be March 7-8 as that's my Spring Break but all the rest are fine by me ^

Feb. or March works ok for me...April is marginal.

Unless I am reading something wrong, Feb. 23-25 is not a weekend...Was that on purpose?

I'd probably prefer April.

jrl767 Nov 5, 2014 9:11 am

Apr is likely to be when we are **finally** relocating back to the Real Washington (SEA) from the Other Washington (DC), but DAY is definitely on the route; that said, I think I'd cast my vote for 27 Feb - 1 Mar

I think there are two possible typos that can be considered:

23-25 Jan is indeed a weekend, but from a fair amount of experience I can say that DAY in late Jan is probably not a great idea in terms of potential weather complications

13-15 Feb is Presidents' Day weekend (incl Mon 16), so that's probably not a good idea either

Just a note to consider/FYI, I know those of us who have been the the many Lexington Kentucky Horse & Bourbon Do's were planning a spring trip. Seeing as Keeneland has it's races in April, this date may conflict depending upon which April 2015 weekend is chosen.

On the other hand, if they were just a week apart, I might be up for just hanging around that region for the week in between the two events. I can think of worse things than a week of drinking bourbon. ;)

(Don't put too much stock in this suggestion, though, as I currently have tentative plans to be out of the country around this particular time...)

mattp1987 Nov 6, 2014 6:00 pm

All, sorry for posting and then literally going offline for awhile. I was gone for the weekend and have spent the week preparing for and taking exams.

I've since discovered that the April date I suggested conflicts with another event that several who have posted here will be attending.

Looking back now, I'm not sure what exactly I meant. I was trying to get the post completed so I could head to the airport. It may have been the January date that I was trying to propose, but that's probably not the best time to come to OH. I will be house shopping (hopefully in TX) Presidents' Day weekend, but if the long weekend is better that's a possibility that could be considered with someone else taking the reins.

I'll re-propose:

Feb 13-16 (Pres Day weekend and I'm gone)
Feb 20-22
Feb 27 - March 1
March 6-8

I am good with any of these dates, but would agree about staying away from Pres DAY weekend. :p

I am not sure how early on Fridays anyone may be available/arriving, but there are special tours available on Friday afternoons for anyone particularly interested in restoration activity:

http://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/new...p?id=123429656

Get a first-hand look at the aircraft restoration process when you sign up for a Behind the Scenes Tour at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. Registration for these free tours, which take place nearly every Friday from 12:15-3 p.m., is now open through May 2015. Space is limited, so advance registration is required....
I will probably need to be at work on Friday afternoon, but thought it may be of interest to others.
