just a thought ... could we perhaps plan something for Fri 28 Aug and the morning of Sat 29 Aug, and then mosey up to Toledo (approx 2-2.5 hr drive, or so the experts say) for baseball?

given that I owe a visit to about a dozen of my former AF colleagues at WPAFB, I would most likely try to fly into DAY/CMH on Thurs afternoon (27th) and depart on Sun

Consider this to be another vote for the weekend of Aug 28! |

I would ask if folks haven't already, please post to the Toledo thread so that I can keep track of who is interested in tickets. thanks. |
Are you all going with the Aug 28-29 dates? I'm going to VA to visit my parents that weekend, but I'd potentially be up for getting lunch Friday although I have class from 10-11 and 12-1 or dinner/drinks Thurs night if anyone is coming in early. The Dayton Dragons are in town that weekend too, so if you want to do lots of baseball during the weekend I'd love to go to the game on the 27th with anyone coming in early.
|
We'll be hiking in Theodore Roosevelt Nat'l Park that weekend so unfortunately I won't be able to join you in Toledo. Have a great time everyone.

At the Holy Toledo DO back in August, there was some discussion of trying this one again in summer 2016.
I thought I'd note that the Air Force Museum is in the process of moving the Presidential Aircraft and Research & Development aircraft into a brand new building connected to the main museum complex. Previously those aircraft were in an old "annex" inside WPAFB, and the aircraft aren't available for viewing during the move. The new addition is slated to open in June 2016 (exact date not yet announced). So it might be good, for those interested, to plan for a post-June date - though of course there is plenty to see at the museum even without viewing the Presidential/R&D collection. Someone at the Toledo event suggested that a Dayton Dragons baseball game could also be a part of the DO. Here is a link to the 2016 schedule: http://www.milb.com/schedule/index.j...459&m=7&y=2016 |
I stopped by DAY on the way to the Toledo Do last year; DAY is definitely DO-worthy!
I may end up going on my own to DAY, either at the end of July or after Labor Day, if the official DO dates don't fit into my schedule this summer. Last time I spent ~3 hours at Wright-Pat and covered only ~25% of all that was on display! |

this will definitely be on my calendar as long as it doesn't conflict with our mid-Jul EDI/AMS trip ... however, I am also hopeful that mattp1987 and GRALISTAIR will organize some sort of beer- and/or bourbon-based meetup (preferably on a weekend) between now and the time Matt departs the fix at WPAFB in late Mar

The NMUSAF is always open and is a good option for a cold day. Even with the presidential and experimental aircraft exhibits closed for the time being there is plenty to see. I haven't checked out all the other aero sites, but I will say that Wright Cycle Company was somewhat disappointing. I live near downtown and in walking distance of three breweries, numerous beer bars, and one of the top whiskey/bourbon bars outside the great state of Kentucky. There's also nice rooftop patio on my building we could use for a cookout/potluck if the weather looks nice. One downside is that there is really only one downtown hotel (Crowne Plaza). Unfortunately, the Dragons don't resume play until April. |
I like that mid-March schedule ... for now, at least :/
|
I'm interested in principle, although in that timeframe the weekends that work well for me are 3/18-20, 3/25-27 (although that's Easter weekend), 4/1-3 (which I gather may be too late).
I can't commit to it yet though, so definitely don't weight my preferences very highly if at all :) |
As a DAY local (South of town), I am always willing to hang out...as long as I am not away on travel.
mattp1987: I assume you are talking about The Century Bar? http://www.centurybourbon.com/ Sounds like a fun weekend to me ^ |

I'm new around these parts, but there aren't many events that revolve around good beer and whiskey that I'm not down for. My schedule is incredibly flexible, so as long as you don't do something silly like plan it for St Paddys, I'm pretty sure I'm in. Gives me an excuse to run to Muncie, even, which I keep putting off.

Yes, I'm for that. The weekend of March 11-13 would probably work well for me. It might be a little chilly for an official DO, but I'm up for it if others are. I definitely cannot do Presidents Day (Feb 12-15) or the weekend after (Feb 19-21).

Well, I ran it by the boss who told me that she'd booked us for a conference in Birmingham, AL on Sat 3/19 so March is completely out for me as is April. Too bad. |
I'll be working that weekend as I'm headed to South Korea and Japan on Monday the 14th :(
|
Will definitely attend a DAY DO. Maybe interested in the bb game.

what's your return? I return on the 21st. It's my last Spring Break ever, bar exam or not, I WILL be celebrating it in style. |

Okay, so seeing this thread pushed me to look at my schedule to see if/when I could make it to the DAY area. I am already busy on the suggested weekend of March 11-13, so I ended up booking Avios flights (while they are still 4500 each way) to CMH on the morning of Thursday March 24 and returning on the afternoon of Saturday the 26th. I plan to spend a few hours at the Museum of the AF at least two of those days; if anyone wants to join me there and/or for dinner at BJ's (and/or other possibilities) just let me know

Just be aware that AFIT graduation is at the Museum the evening of March 24. It doesn't start until after closing time, but there might be larger crowds from family members in town for graduation. I'll have to pass on meeting up, unfortunately. Thursday will be spent finishing packing my moving truck and then at graduation, and I'll be hitting the road as early as I can Friday. I have quite a bit of driving to do before unpacking my truck and then flying SAT-LAX-BNE on Sunday.
P.S. - Leaving Dayton Friday morning and flying out of SAT on Sunday? I hope you have someone to help you with driving/unpacking the truck! |
I'm local so pretty flexible. March 11-13 probably wouldn't work for me, but my schedule is mostly open otherwise in March. April 8-9 I'm out of town.
I actually haven't made it to the Century Bar mentioned up-thread but am anxious to try it, having received many recommendations from friends. |

I'm only quoting this one reply, but it sounds like March 18-20 would work better for a majority of respondents. Is this a correct assessment? I'd like to get something selected pretty soon in case anyone is buying tickets to travel into town.

I need to look at my bicoastal work split ... currently thinking to fly WAS-SEA on Thurs afternoon, attend a cybersecurity colloquium the morning of Fri 18th, and work from home the following week ... if I can promote that by a week I might be on a jet to DAY/CMH/CVG Sat morning (maybe even Fri afternoon or redeye; search the Delta Lounge thread for the key phrase "supportive partner" ... she's met the two gentlemen behind this plan, and certainly understands my interest in joining in the social activities)
|
SFO-CVG dropped to 30K pesos this morning so I went ahead and grabbed that just to have something in place, since I can always cancel it later...

I'm not committing to anything quite yet, because I'm not sure how things will be then, between school and such. |
I'm having trouble nailing down a weekend that really works for most of us. I'm still available the middle two weekends in March, but it sounds like numerous people have issues with each of those. If we don't get a DO together by the time I leave I'm still happy to meet any locals or visitors for drinks.

Nice to see this thread pop up occasionally.
If I am in town, I am always ready to join some FT'ers for drinks and nibbles. |
I would like to go. It just seems the Wright thing to do. :p

I'm going SEA-LAX on Tues evening 8 Mar for work purposes on Wed ... I can get the Wed redeye to CMH (very decent A fare on the flat-bed 763 over ATL => obvious SDC-via-JFK possibilities); already booked the DAY Marriott for Thurs night |

I assume you're referring to the Marriott just off the UD campus by Carillon park. There's a brewery in the park now that brews in the German tradition. I haven't actually tried their beers, but I went to an Oktoberfest event that they hosted. Weird story, you couldn't get their beers unless you sat in the restaurant, but the outdoor area had several tents selling actual German beers. |
LA-->DC on the Wed redeye would probably be better for me in terms of professional dynamics, since I'm going DC-->SEA on 25 Feb ... LOTS of possibilities to meet up in this area, and some of the DC Happy Hour regulars might be interested as well
