Virgin SYD-OOL was only $67 USD one way on orbitz.com so i booked it, Arriving OOL on May 27th. It was $40 more on QF and i didnt think it was worth the upcharge to earn 500EQM on AS. Also appears they have many more daily flights should there be any issues. Nice to avoid the CC fee

"There is movement at the station .... "

Flyertalker patience is appreciated, and the ad-hoc organising Committee spread across 3 or 4 states, is close to picking a time that we are all near a computer, and this Sunday evening AEST is looking very likely to be that time to kick off -

OzFest #13. "Gold Coast Queensland" Australia. Memorial Day Weekend, May 27-29, 2016

Please stay tuned.

Serious question .. . do other here follow those superstitious things that number #13 is unlucky?

I always thought it was a bit silly, but was in Beijing for a few days last week and the (excellent) Hilton DoubleTree I stayed at had no floor #13 (or #4!) and I asked the Australian General Manager when I caught up with him for a drink, why that was.

He told me that is China NO new building has a floor 4, 13 or 14, as many guests simply refuse to take/buy rooms on those floors as they are regarded as "very unlucky". Or with apartments, they get a lot LESS for them.

Seemed a little extreme to me, and asked tour guides and others, and all agreed that was near universal. for apartment buildings, and even the number of units on floor of apartment buildings.

i.e. On floor 11 there will generally not be an apartment 4 or 13 on any recent build. Surprised me.

Car number-plates in Beijing are the same. If you are allocated one starting with 4, or even with the number 4 somewhere in it they turn them back in for a new one. For a half hour of driving in traffic I did not see a single 4 on any numberplate!

Flew to adjoining Mongolia the next week and number 9 is their Lucky number akin to the Chinese 8, but there is no "unlucky" one there. Odd.

So no-one has an issue with "OzFest 13"?

Not me, I'm fine with '13', or any other number you choose.

So by popular vote we will not skip #13 for superstitious reasons

New thread For Gold Coast should be up by about 8pm (4½ hours from this post, depending on how close the Swans AFL match gets!) so anyone planning to attend might like to pop by then and add an early post.

I stayed on level 4 at a HKG hotel once so as a Westerner was obviously a prime target for that floor.

I've also seen a floor 12a at another HKG hotel not that for a minute I'm advocating "Ozfest 12a Gold Coast."

I'm sure that when QF had their 747-300's they did have a row 13 upstairs but not on the 744's which jumps from row 12 to 14. A380's must be exempt as the famed 'Emerald City' is rows 11,12 & 13.

They also referred to the stretched upper deck as 'extended upper deck' or EUD as the acronym SUD also meant sudden unexplained death. I guess that was more superstitious than the number 13.
