MCI BBQ DO IX - May 2-4, 2014
I'm back!!! I want to give a special thank you to Condition One for keeping this tradition alive. I'm back on the road with my new job and ready to swap travel tips and stories with the Flyertalk family!
I am not going to make any drastic changes (why fix it if it ain't broke?)
Based off our traditional schedule:
-------------------------------------------------------------
Friday, May 2- 5pm-8:15pm (Happy Hour), Dinner at 8:15pm (or thereabouts)
Fiorella's Jack Stack (FreightHouse, Crossroads Art District)
www.jackstackbbq.com
- This is our traditional kickoff dinner, preceded by an extended happy hour while we wait for people to filter in. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu, so just bring an empty stomach!
-------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday, May 3 - 11am until we fall into a food coma. As usual, we'll be winging it after OK Joe's.
Oklahoma Joe's (inside the Diamond Shamrock gas station)--Mission Road---This one is on the Kansas side.
www.oklahomajoesbbq.com
- Get here early (suggest 10:45am - before it opens) because this place fills up fast! A favorite is the Z-Man and the onion rings.
Danny Edward's
www.dannyedwardsblvdbbq.com
- We walked away pretty impressed with the brisket two years ago.
LC's
- Easily located by the billowing clouds of smoke. The burnt ends are especially good here.
Arthur Bryant's
www.arthurbryantsbbq.com
- Another favorite. Try the sausage, brisket, and/or pulled pork.
Gates BBQ (the Original) on Brooklyn Avenue
www.gatesbbq.com
- "Hi, May I Help You?" - prepare to be yelled at when you walk in. Some people are fans of Gates, but my friends and I walked away several times, unimpressed.
- Foo's Frozen Custard
http://www.foosfabulousfrozencustard...best_2010.html
- It doesn't matter if you're stuffed by now or not. Frozen custard just fills in the cracks!
In between BBQ joints, many of us will be buying Christopher Elbow chocolates, going to Harrah's to try our luck at craps, or visiting one of many museums located in throughout the city. The airline museum at the downtown airport is one of my favorites as well.
Sunday, May 4, 2014
At your leisure. We usually don't add any BBQ to the Sunday schedule as most are recovering from the past two days.
------------------------------------------------
If anyone would like to try a new spot, suggest it and we'll try the best to accommodate. Those of you who have been to this DO before know that it's just a relaxed weekend filled with food porn aka KC BBQ.

Glad to have you back, Rob. Unfortunately, I'm afraid I'm unlikely for those dates. I depart for Australia via Asia on the 19th and really need to be in DC the weekend of May 16-18 to take care of loose ends.

Let's do this. Since there are no other DO's for the first week of May. Let's change the date to May 2-4.
MODERATOR: Can I get a date change to May 2-4?

This is now on our radar and we hope to (finally) get to the BBQ DO. For so many years it has been in a conflict with business and other plans that all we could do was read the thread with envy.
Since, as usual, nobody offered me a seat in his box at the Derby , this looks like the year. ^

BTW, We did http://www.brobecksbbq.com/ last year and it was a big hit.
I'd like to hit up http://woodyardbbq.com/ as well that weekend for a sample.

I forgot to mention that the Friday of this DO is "First Fridays" in the Crossroads area (the same area where Jack Stack is located). A plethora of art galleries, music and great vibe in the area.
