Yep, I've turned to this site - and a couple of other similar blogs - once or twice, but I try to avoid doing that unless I'm just totally stuck. The writer has since left New York, but he has agreed to join us for a meal if he is ever back in town.

For Benin, we're going to try Meytex Cafe for lunch tomorrow (May 10) @ 1:00pm. This is a Ghanian establishment, but since there are no Beninese restaurants in the city, we're going to count this one as such by following the list of dishes recommended by the Beninese Mission - specifically fufu and tilapia with a tomato-based sauce. It's short notice, but feel free to come along if you don't have lunch plans tomorrow.



It looks like I'll be in town both of these dates, but I need to do a bit more research on the restaurant situation over the weekend. There's a possibility we may need to do tweak the lineup again and have Bosnia on 5/21 and Bolivia on 5/24.

Dates have firmed and will be around in 4 weeks time - Fri 6th and Sat 7th (now departing JFK after 2pm Sunday).

This is a very cool idea!! The sort of thing that I know will make me alter my travel plans one day just so it coincides with a meal. :)

Let's shoot for Saturday the 7th. I think this would be a good day for the Brazilian meal.

If I'm in town I'm always happy to schedule a meal around visitors' schedules. :)

Any idea yet where Bosnia (5/21?) will be? I can probably make it if it's around dinner time but depending on location. Can't make 5/24 but I'm definitely in for 6/7 for Brazil.

As it turns out there is no need to flip Bolivia/Bosnia.

The Bolivian meal will be at Mi Bolivia in Sunnyside, Queens on Wednesday, May 21. This is to accomodate jackal, who will be flying in that afternoon. I'm thinking 6pm or so should work.

Bosnia will then be Saturday, May 24 as originally planned. I still need to settle on a location and time for this one. karung99 - is there a time of day that you would prefer?

The BRT will be having dinner at Junior's in Brooklyn on Saturday June 14.

I'm interested in attending the Bolivian dining event. How are people getting there? I will be coming from NJ by train and arriving at Penn Station. By public transportation it looks like I can take the subway to Queens and then a bus to the restaurant. If anyone is driving, can you give me a ride along the way?

Btw I absolutely love this idea of hitting all the global cuisines! I'm not sure if you're interested in reaching greater masses. Have you considered a Meetup group?

@dhammer53 - I suppose Brooklyn would fall right after Brazil on the list if it had any kind of sovereignty, so I may have to join you guys for dinner, assuming you can offer some pointers about the ethnic cuisine in your borough/native land. :)

@yunicorner - You can take the (local) 7 train to 46th Street, from which the restaurant is about a 5-8 minute walk. I have noticed that searching for this restaurant in Google Maps will occasionally point you to a location on a different section of 48th Ave in Jamaica - much too far to the East. As for reaching larger groups, I'm torn. I have considered creating a blog or Meetup group to accompany the thread, but I have thus far resisted for several reasons, primarily because I don't want the project to get away from me and become an exercise in organizing 180 large dinner parties. I may come around, but I need to first figure out an approach that would keep things manageable.

We also are flying in on the 21st but scheduled to get into EWR much too late. However, if we get done early enough on the job out west and the SDC Gods smile, we can get to LGA (or even JFK) in time to join up with you. Then all we would need to do is pull up two more chairs. :)

Oh my goodness! Thank you for showing me the correct spot. Like you mentioned, google maps gave me a place waaaaaay out east. So now it's a 30 min ride from Penn station instead of 1.5 hr ride. Count me in.

My suggestion for a Meetup group is mostly selfish as then I would get the notifications when there is a new dining event. :) But I understand where you are coming from. I am a Meetup organizer and there are always no-shows. And for restaurants where you have to make reservations, a large number of no-shows creates a really bad impression. As for managing large group sizes I really haven't had many issues with that. However, in Meetup you can set an attendee limit. We can discuss more next week though!

Yikes, it's a good thing you asked for a ride then before going all the way out to Jamaica. To be safe, I've updated the wiki post with a warning (and your confirmed attendance).

I will definitely be interested to hear your experiences as an organizer on Meetup, but unless you're talking about application-specific notification functionality, you should be able to keep up with us by subscribing to this thread (in the 'Thread Tools' dropdown on the first post of any page). I keep the wiki updated with plans as they are confirmed, and the subscription will email you when anyone posts to the thread.
